This is absolutely terrible that this is happening to these students and the level of control that the schools have is wild. I will leave this post with a reply to me posting the link on fedi: "1984 was a warning, not a ******* HOW-TO GUIDE."

(I should mention this post isn't an attack towards any religions, besides some normal schools can have high levels of surveillance)

Down to the parents to do something about it if they don't like it.

In todays world, its not the worst thing that could be happening.

They're children, they've yet to have any responsibility (ie. be held accountable) but if something happens on these devices then the school or parents will be held responsible in some form or other.

I think it's frankly absurd that you can't even have music on these devices that aren't related to coursework (which will be instantly spotted by the constant surveillance). A lot of school issued computers might be used for other purposes, I know some people who have laptops issued by schools.

You heard some of the attrocious music being piped into kids currently... I have and its f****** foul
Denying people's right altogether though is not the way to go.

I will happily say modern music isn't great, and I know some people wouldn't agree with the music I listen to but denying people access to it just isn't right. So what if I want to listen to a track that might mention things relating to death (keeping in mind I'm referring to multiple tracks in a 2021 album so fairly modern)?

My parents got into trouble when I started replicating Eminem lyrics at school... thats a minor compared to some of the things my friends kids have been up to due to modern standards of media (both on radio and internet)

Whilst it is necessary for schools to implement content filtering to identify children who may be at risk of harm, the fact that these filters are being implemented and enforced by a religious institution seems alarming, as they may not be following government guidelines.

I believe that government guidelines, drawn up by independent experts, should determine what is acceptable for each age group, and education should be central to the system so that children can learn to use the internet responsibly in the future.

Only then can meaningful change occur. Enforcement is only one part of the puzzle.

agreed ...this is a typical example of the idiom - 'the devil is in the details' i.e. when you look deeper you then see the merits and not the 'knee-jerk' or 'perceived' demerits.
Yeah, you can notice some really strange things in music, even artists that you would consider as relatively safe (Rick Astley, I'm serious) aren't actually.

Total censorship still isn't the way to go about this.

so what's the preferred workable/effective alternative then?
I don't know, but an outright block just isn't right. There's plenty of music that are fine for people to listen to, shouldn't block all music just because some music may mention topics you don't want to hear 😟

so is this 'block' only due to 'content' or could it also have something to do with 'time-spent' listening to music or sharing of etc?

"[Parents] are taught how to permanently delete any unsuitable files – such as music unrelated to school work – and to search for terms of concern"

The internet surveillance is just another symptom of the bigger issue, which is they have an extremist sect there and those kids are not there by accident, their (evangelical) parents put them there. That is the problem.

For me Christianity is basically "love one another", anything extra is just hogwash put there by various church and cult leaders.

@Mark.J just want to double check whether this thread is even ok for the forums? Don't think I'm breaking the rules but I know it's a touchy subject with some things in the article.
It's a bit borderline, as there is a tech aspect to it, albeit not UK related. Did you want me to close it or?
