Success on Three with modded router

Here comes the Three cynic...

Just you wait. Few months from now your service will be horrendous, Three CS will tell you it's temporary but it never is.

I've also been pleasantly surprised with Three's network but it never lasts. 24 isn't even that bad as Three goes.. Once Speedtest.net refused to loads and then when it finally does and you're getting sub 1-meg speeds, that's when you're getting the Three experience.

@MrLou & @rob77 - really awesome to hear about your setup. Thanks for your business & recommendation!

We've referred a few customers to Chris @Router-Mods, and he does indeed do an excellent job :)

Happy to answer any questions anyone has about the antenna side of things.

After years of living with FTTC from Origin Broadband I finally had enough this year when my speeds plummeted from the heady heights of 38/8 to around 25/4. FTTP not due here for years, no other fixed s line options.

I tried a few mobile broadband routers and experimented with external antenna in my loft. All useful info but lead me to realise that I needed to get higher and out from under the tiles and solar panels

To cut a long story short I realised that a modded CPE Pro 2 would probably be my best option. A week later, with three Bluespot antenna I'm getting excellent service, consistently 300mbps peaking at 550 and for £22/month. Upload between 20 and 55mbps.

Hopefully it will be reliable, but after a couple of days I've no reason to be unhappy. My broadband is 10x faster and for about the same monthly fee.

Upfront cost was about £400 for antenna, router mod service and antenna installation.

If you're within 3 or 4km of a 5g site and can get external antenna pointed at it, probably among the most cost effective way to get high speed service in the UK.

Hey MrLou, Thank you for this post.

Chris at Router-mods has just had my CPE Pro 2 and it's on it's way back to me now. I'm planning a similar setup to yourself. Did you use the bluespot combination 4g/5g antennas or the minis? Are you using all 4 5G antennas and 2 of the 4G?

Any more info on your setup would be wonderful.

Do the Bluespot antennas support n28, n3, n1 and n7?
Its not really a case of 'support' for an antenna, or for a particular technology (2/3/4/5G) - its more if an antenna has been designed and developed to produce an acceptable gain for a given frequency range - if it hasn't, then the use of an antenna may produce a net loss of gain within a given frequency than compared to without the antenna

They will work at those frequencies and they're ok, but the gain is not great and would not use for long distance. I've got a spare one here I need to get rid of but it was a wall mounted version that I've 'converted' to pole mount.

The best wide band antenna I've used have been Iskra P60/P58. Excellent gain with low VSWR at most frequencies. Got 2 P60 outside now and spare pair of P58 in the garage.
