Supanet, too good to be true?

Too good to be true? It usually is.
You get what you pay for. These deals are usually unsustainable.
Sorry.

But have you followed the link "what you get"? All our packages come with a 10GB bandwidth allowance, extra charges at £2 per GB. A VERY clever play on words - it is (theoretically) unlimited BUT you will pay £2 per GB over 10GB to use this unlimited service

Curious, when I followed that link just now it stated:

Variable bandwidth allowances
All of our Broadband packages have unlimited bandwidth.

It's almost as if somebody were watching this topic..

I always knew the 'unregistered' forum was a double edged sword

I dont think I need to say much about low cost unlimited stuff, Fast4 is proving me right at this very moment.

Still, I daresay many many people will sign up. Maybe the rep will even make an appearance here

I hope they provide MAC Keys when it all goes tits up, and I fear it will.

These costs are as Mark posted in the news are not even above wholesale costs (the costs ISPs have to buy from the likes of BT, Tiscali etc), that's excluding the "unlimited" bandwidth costs that have to be accounted for and the staff who no doubt work for free and rent on buildings that must be a bargin bucket prices :/

I echo what exactly old dude said. No way you can sustain such low cost broadband without the inevitable collapse in speed as virtually everybody on slow4 has found out to their cost.

As you say it seems "strange", however, now we have a "Just Broadband" package costing more than a "Silver" package that does not include the "Free" calls that the Silver package does! (Until this changes too).
Seems there are probably some dubious T&Cs attached to these packages that are not immediately apparent.

That's because the call charges cross subsidise the ADSL costs.

<engage lie mode> I would give it a go,honest</lie>Unfortunately I had to cut my bargepole up, as people in the next county were complaining about tripping over it.

They're just lucky it was a bargepole and not something x-rated :) .

Conversation.. killed.

So what is the (your) explanation for ALL three packages being advertised as having the same benefits, BUT "Just Broadband" with includes phone benefits, why is there a difference in price between Silver & Gold? I of course would go for Gold as it is more valuable but what benefits would I get over Silver (which would tarnish or perhaps they all do)!

Presumably gold is more expensive because it allegedly includes free daytime calls. The 'best' out of those packages to choose would be whichsoever is the cheapest to buy your way out of during the minimum term, as that is what you may well find yourself doing

Expect very heavy traffic management or congestion, and don't forget umlimited usage can in fact be far, far more limited than you might expect.

If he does then I reckon they'll join your ever-growing fan club, which includes among others, Fast4. ;)

It was until he used his chopper on it!

Well it is now!

You'e got to admit it's clever though:

"Details of any allowances applicable to your chosen broadband package and your allocated data transfer allowance (your Usage Allowance ) are stated on the Supanet portal, in your Order Confirmation and in My Account."

In other words we tell you the restrictions AFTER you have signed up!

Ah, they all dissapear after a while anyway, after making all the same bunkum up about never putting on caps and being customer focused, etc etc. Spot of deju vu anyone?

the terms and conditions changed today to fall in line with the unlimited tag

no mention of any limits when u read all tc's and c's did find an AUP acceptable usage policy is this an fup in disguise or stealth mode, no limits set though just a fact of supanet being able to disconnect anyone who they feel is not adhearing to the AUP.....

Hello I was the original poster here. I phoned up today to try and understand the different packages and this is what I can gather.

For changing broadband provider to Supanet the monthly fee is £7.99/month if you take up their phoneline. £9.99/month if you keep your existing phoneline.

So really, £9.99 is the same fee as UkOnline and Plusnet and probably DOES have some limitation somewhere.

NoS1 - to be honest, the only advice I would give is to avoid this like the plague. They are reselling broadband access at (or very close to) the costs they are charged by BT just for the connection - and that's before usage is taken into account, which can cost a fair bit.

This industry is littered with companies that have tried to offer far too good a deal at far too low a price, and they all disappear sooner or later, often with lots of recriminations and customers being the ones to suffer the most.

To my mind there are 5 main types of ISP -

Ones that offer lots of bandwith and quality of service, but charge a price that reflects that - high compared to other ISPs, but you get what you pay for (Zen is highly thought of, for example)

Ones that offer low caps for a low price (great for people who just want pages to load faster than dial-up and free up the phone line, but no real interest in downloading). Last time I looked Namesco was pretty good for this - I used them in the past and they were excellent.

Then there is the ones that try to strike a balance between the two - not all are successful. Entanet resellers such as UKFSN spring to mind.

On top of these you have the big 4 (BT, AOL, Tiscali plus Virgin if you would consider cable bb). I wouldn't touch these with a bargepole - not even a very big one!

Then you have the niche market ISPs - I use Be, which offers 24mb with no limit that I've ever hit for £24 (there is a cheaper option with a cap - £14 for 4Gb at 24mb)

You choose your ISP based on your requirements, but don't go for the cheapest unless the price reflects the product they are offering.
