Super-Slow speeds today??

Hi Kits, I live in deepest, darkest Malvern, Worcestershire, so about equidistant to both London and Manchester (~100 miles).

When I was with Vispa, Speedtest always showed me in Shropshire - which is where Vispa used to be based; before the takeover and plunge in service levels.

Vispa has never based in Shropshire.

Entanet has always been based in Shropshire
Aquiss has always been based Shropshire
You are not going via Manchester, you are connected via the Birmingham handoff.

Sorry, my memory must be playing tricks on me, I thought Vispa was Shropshire.

I may be going via Birmingham, but Speednet shows me in Manchester.... oops, LONDON again.

I would post an image, but I dont use on line photo hosting any more, and attachments have been disabled for quite a while.

For what its worth, Speedtest has never shown me in Birmingham.

I tried turning NoScript, ABP+ etc off, to see if this was causing a Speedtest website location glitch, but I am still in London.

Not sure if it's still the case but Three MBB IP addresses always used to show as being "geographically homed" (if that's the expression) in Central London, IIRC, just around the corner from St. Paul's, so Speedtest.net would always opt for London.

I was showing as in Manchester a few days ago, as I was on most of the occasions I have run speedtest over the last few years. London only started appearing recently.

If I run speedtest via my mobile, it correctly shows Gloucester as the nearest server (distance 19 miles), both using WiFi and mobile data, so it seems to be a PC/Win7 issue.

It is strange, ST say they geo-locate using the IP address, but both PC and phone (via Wifi), use the same router, so have the same IP address, yet running a PC based test immediately after the phone tests - it still says I am in London.

@Kits. We were talking about Mb/MB recently; while going through the ST site I noticed that both can be selected via the "Settings" page; I knew I remembered both being an option, but you have to be registered and logged in to select it (and it doesnt appear on the mobile version at all).

Speedtest.net just routes you to various test servers, based on what it thinks he your location/busy server loads (using geoip checking I suspect). I really don't think it's trying to correctly determine your location.

I have little faith in these online location detection things.
Here I am, sat in north-west London, using Three Mobile and a VPN whose server is in Maidenhead.

Speedtest thinks I'm in Preston.

My sister's Farcebook page, which I check once in a while just to make sure she hasn't fallen off the boat and joined the supermarket trolleys in the Walsall Canal, is evidently convinced that I'm overseas somewhere - everything except the actual text of her messages comes up in a foreign language, Spanish I think. After scratching my head and experimenting, I find that I can get it to display in English by putting "en-gb." in front of the address, but it doesn't remember it for links. As usual with something from an American outfit, it's a case of "all the technology but no idea how to use it", so if, for example, I click her photos bit, it goes back to being No-spika-da-English again.

For a couple of years Google kept switching gmail to Chinese, even when I was quite clearly using English; I DID have the Chinese input option installed, but it is exactly that, the option to input Chinese - the whole OS was installed in UK English.
