Switching from AOL?

I'm currently using AOL which is sub par imo but for the price of £10 a month for a Unlimited 8MB (I only get about 6.5mb though) doesn't seem too bad.

My contract length ended ages ago so can switch if I so wish. I was looking around for other providers which offer a better service for a similar price. Any suggestions?

I've looked at SKY (which was 24m unlimited for £10 a month) but not sure if they are any better then AOL and if my line can even go over 6.5mb.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Can you post some stats from your router - that will allow a guesstimate of your sync on Sky LLU to be given :)

Matt

I would never call 6.5Mbps "only" :) , that's a very good and impressive speed to get for £10 per month and indeed a lot of people on AOL tend to experience far worse; on average they are the slowest of the big players.

Much as Matt says above, if you post your router stats (line attenuation, noise margin, sync/profile speed) then we'll be able to tell you what performance you can expect from a 24Mbps ADSL2+ based service, though with a max of 6.5Mbps on an ADSL1 I'd expect you to do quite well with ADSL2+.

Just be aware that if you're getting a stable 6.5Mbps for £10 per month then you are doing better than the vast majority; just because an ISP advertises 'up to' 24Mbps doesn't mean to say they can deliver it.. you could in fact get something slower. Factor in that the national average UK broadband download speed is around 4.5Mbps and you will get my point.

Ah right cheers. I thought that speed was quite low nowadays but I'm guessing not.

After a bit of a search on the net, found out that ASDL2+ wont be installed in my exchange till around March, which is a expected date also so may be even longer.

I presume AOL isn't offer any up to speeds over 8Mb because not everyone is capable of getting anything other that at the moment.

That ADSL2+ date is probably only for BT's service, however any ADSL2+ / 24Mbps supporting unbundled broadband ISPs (e.g. Sky Broadband Unlimited, TalkTalk, BE Broadband, O2 etc.) available on your exchange would still be able to supply it. Check your exchange to see who is available:
