synched lower than it could be

Hi

During the stabilisation period my modem router was connecting regularly at 7.1 mbps according to windows (i know its not real speeds but it was still high anyway+ i live next to the exchange) with no probs, no disconnects, fast speeds etc... The isp had no reason to raise the snr margin or lower my speeds for any reason. So why is it that afterwards my speed has been dropped to 5.9? I even resisted turning of my modem so that it would stay connected and the isp wont think there are problems and lower my synch.

What can i do to get it back up again?

Never heard of that function, I thought it was set by BT wholesale at the DSLAM.

Can U post which modem/router has this functionality.

I believe some of the Speedtouch routers (Broadcom chaipset) allow you to tweak the SNR margin. I think the tweak effective makes them lie about the margin to the DSLAM

Can anyone else confirm the above regarding the Speedtouch, as I suspect its just wishful thinking as the reply is so vague.

Belkin 7633 (1001uk) Speedtouch 585(v6) Netgear DG834GT are the one's I know of that do it

the command in the belkin is

ADSL configure --snr x (x being number between 30 - 70) which will bring you to about 6dB

for the speedtouch use the DMT tool http://dmt.mhilfe.de/

for info may I suggest going to this thread on ADSLGuide for the DG834GT

http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthr...r=2049944&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&vc=1

happy tweaking :D

edit: Just checked and different versions of DMT work for the other 2 routers as well :D

I also recall reading about a hack for the conexant accessrunner chipset, although it required ftping off the config file editing it and ftping it back, but in all honesty if you have one of those replace it with any router that has either a TI-AR7 or Broadcom chipset and you should get a higher sync anyway.

Make sure any internal phone extension wiring is up to scratch, if possible use one central filter in the master socket and run a dedicated ADSL extension -leave the ring wire unconnected. http://yarwell.blogspot.com/2005/08/adsl-tweaking.html
