system imaging for restoration purposes

l recently reinstalled due to annoyances which were bothering me so much l had to do something about them (basically l was getting random detection sounds like when removing and connecting usb devices, however it was still doing it without any devices).

now lve recreated a clean image using smart recovery2 (a gigabyte tool) however it seems to have an annoying drawback, that being that because l have my system set to japanese for the locale settings so l can execute programs with japanese characters it seems to have the unfortunate annoyance of changing the gui of the smart recovery program, there wasnt any setting when l installed to change the language and l cant find any settings menu to do anything either as lm using only that gigabyte tool rather than any of the others, you see l had some issues with their tools and if l installed them it made no sense to create problems installing programs l didnt need or really use, suffice to say lm either looking for a way to force the program to use english or find another better program that wont cost me anything that will create a system image that works should l need to restore my system without having to go through the annoyance of reinstalling again from scratch.

Have you tried using the Windows Language Bar, which you can change in real-time between different region selections for the computer and or keyboard? Maybe that can be used to tackle the problem.

the language bar doesnt change much as the program goes by locale settings and a reboot is required every time l change it.

as for Macrium Reflect Free it suggests the free version doesnt allow for restoration on this page http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

theres no ticks in the restore area unlike the home area, and l dont really have any cash to even contemplate something l might only use once a year to restore.

That table is for version 6, the current download is version 5 (which I suggest you keep the installer for!) and supports everything except servers :)

Even then I'm unsure what they mean - ReDeploy looks like it is a feature to restore to hardware that isn't the same as the computer you backed up on. I'm going to place my bets that version 6, when it comes out, will still do a basic image restore.

so the current version can create images but not restore them? kinda pointless if you cant use it to restore.. could really use something that can.

Edit:

l saw more information over on sevenforums which made me more interested in trying it, lve just created an image of my C drive which lve stored on another drive on my system (and backed up on an external, l have a bit more space to play with now since l upgraded my hard drives), so theoretically my yearly reinstalls should be as simple as just restoring said image which will mean not having to download as many windows updates (or waste disks slipstreaming updates, l made one slipstreamed disk last year to save time). tho l do like the look of Redeploy, l might get a licence just to be able to use the feature as it will save so much time if l can restore an image to a completely new setup, but if this goes well l could just update the image once a year as every time l restore l just need add the updates and create a new image not to mention reinstalling would be as simple as just executing the image without all the annoyance of having to reinstall all my programs and change system settings (which lm assuming will be all setup to whatever my settings are now which will save me remembering all the tweaks l usually do).

The current version does everything.. The new version does, from that table, look like backup only (pretty useless).
I expect the table is actually wrong / missleading to get sales and the new free version will still do everything.

Try it and see? It's a good program. I've used it twice over the weekend on various computers and love it.

well, like l said l have created an image on my F: drive of my OS (and also made a copy of that backup onto an external drive so l have to copies backed up for restoration purposes), tho l wont know how well it works unless l have to use it.. which will likely be some point next year given l prefer to have a clean install once a year (only reason l lasted six months this time was because l was having annoying usb hardware detection sounds which seemed to come from nowhere).

I might give that a go too since I'll shortly need to upgrade an old laptop HD to an SSD replacement and have no idea where the original Windows backups are etc. Might as well just clone what's on there now instead.

uh most laptops have a recovery partition, just a matter of finding the right key presses to access the setup. tho next laptop reinstall l might just make an image to save time on updates.

Mark,

If cloning onto an SSD that is smaller than your existing Hard disk - use Easus Partition Manager Free to shrink the partition first so it will fit and then Macrium Reflect clone and off you go!

Ah yes I completely forgot you needed to do that, been a couple of years since I last did one. Thanks.
