T-Mobile UK Preps 14.4Mbps Mobile Broadband Speeds

Vodafone have been the market leaders in the speed contest for quite some time - I would be very surprised if T-Mobile do increase their speeds, although it's a tough world out there at the moment. Someone will need to up their games to stay market leader in these turbulent times.

What do people think about the potential taxes providers could face if the Government gets their way?

Me - the mobile industry is definitely capable of expanding broadband reach but I think it would be a huge mistake to burden providers with complex regulation or massive licensing fees.

With the limited bandwidth of the masts this is really stupid.

Average 3.5G mast has ~6Mbps available for everyone within 5km. A solid 1Mb connection would be more preferable.

What gets me is the usage allowances, backhaul costs should be(?) quite a lot lower than land-line connections due to the lower speed (1Mbps average), mast usage can be solved by dividing the speed available between people connected. Unless they are being really skint.

Do they use BT pipes to connect masts back to the network?
