Talk talk switch problem charging for a line which i can not use

I have verbally given 30 days notice to talk talk on the 30th Aug that I was canceling my contract (Tel & Broadband) and moving to Sky. I was expecting to maintain the same tel number and so the switching over the same line would be easy and continuous without loosing the facility to use the tel/Internet.

Then Sky advised a new tel number (by mistake), the engineer arrived on the 1st Sept and bypassed the connection (so although I only have one physical socket and one cable to connect I have two live lines). This represented a problem because:

Today 6th Sept I had to give another new 30 days notice to the Talk Talk Loyalty Dept to cancel the line and basically I will be charged for another month of use (approx £30) ALTHOUGH I PHYSICALLY CAN NOT USE THE TALK TALK SERVICE.

I have been loyal to TALK TALK for 8 years even paying over the odds because I use the service very little indeed. This does not seem fair to me (although it may be in line with their terms & conditions!) LOYALTY is no longer a benefit now in this competitive times.

Hope others do not fall into the same mistakes or be loyal. I can only suggest to you, just look for the best deal as a customer and squeeze the companies as much as possible for your own benefit.

Three mistakes.

First, Never expect anyone to honour a verbal contract that is not in their favour, especially an ISP not known for honest customer service.

Second, you JOINED TALK TALK!!

Third, You expected to keep your number, when TT are renowned for refusing to release a number once they have gotten their sticky LLU hands on it. (A covert theft of my line by them in conjunction with Vispa cost me my phone number of 15 years and forced me to have a second line fitted to get away from them).

If really stuck - migrate your TT number to a VoIP provider like VoIPTalk or AAISP. Probably simpler than migrating it to a different land line provider. However - far more complicated and you are then tied to using a VoIP / SIP phone in your house forever and can't easily re-use the internal wiring.

Ofcom definitely needs to find a better solution for handling the ownership of phone numbers as it's far too easy to lose one, especially when moving between two different telephone exchanges or network platforms.
