TalkTalk FTTC is better than BT FTTP (for ping)

BT FTTP (150mbps package) at my home in Belfast gets me a ping of 31ms

Yet my Grandmother , who lives just 1 mile up the road from me, her TalkTalk 60mbps FTTC package gets a ping of 18ms ??

Why on earth would this be?

I've tested this on multiple occasions over both WiFi using my iPhone, Mac and Windows Laptops.
 
yea i have BT fttp and im getting 2-3ms, but when i had TalkTalk FTTP i was getting 1ms...

switching back to TT in 2 weeks though :)
 
Run a MTR (using e.g. winmtr on Windows) to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 on both networks and compare the results of each hop.

I'm in Dromore NI on FTTP and I get about 15mS ping to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8, I think that is normal for NI as the first hop is BT core in London.

Are you using a wired connection to test or only wireless, the wireless one will be
dependent on the wireless router connection

TalkTalk use IPoE, BT use PPPoE.

What are you pinging? Bear in mind TalkTalk and BT might have different upstream peering relationships.
As an example, say I live in Edinburgh:
On one ISP, my traffic is routed internally over the ISP network down to Manchester, and is peered with the internet there. When I do a speedtest to a server located in Edinburgh, the traffic must traverse from Edinburgh to Manchester and back again.
On another ISP, it's peered with the internet in Edinburgh, so my traffic has to travel a much shorter physical distance to get to the speedtest server, also located in Edinburgh.
These differences could easily add up to 20ms difference.
But this will only really matter when you're connecting to servers that are physically closer to your peering point with the internet. Both ISPs in the example above would give me the same ping to London, or Frankfurt.
 
Using WiFi to measure pings is not a good idea since obviously WiFi adds its own latency. Use a wired connection, directly connected to the ISP's router via ethernet cable.

Its because there's a 99.99% chance you are testing on a different server. Try doing a speed test to a sever in London and see what ping you get then. You should get about 13-16ms over ethernet.

Source: I used to be the same package and got 29-31ms ping to a server in Derry/Londonderry, but 14-19ms to London.

Have tested multiple times over both wired and WiFi connections.
 
nope. Testing using same server on both connections. It doesn’t matter too much which server I select. The ping results on each connection are still significantly smaller on the TalkTalk connection.

Wow. This looks interesting. I didn’t know about this. How come BT use an older technology?
Do you mean how come they refused to move to GPON when everyone knew FTTC G.Plus was never going to last and pretty much had the whole UK ransom for not deploying full fibre for years? On the positive side this gave life to the Altnets which now have deployed XGSPON to millions of people and the UK broadband marker will never be the same again. Reminds me of Nokia or Blackberry...

I doubt it. since my mate switched to talktalk from bt his ping on the same games went more consistent and lower

well my boy was on vodafone fttp CF, his ping was 2ms from Southen on sea to London.

then randomly vodafone change the BNG and so his ping has been 8-10ms. i wouldnt recommend vodafone if you care about ping.
