Tallktalk "not so Super fibre"

Hi just before Christmas I decided to move from Plusnet large fibre and goto Talktalk super fibre. Everything went fine with the move but in the last two weeks I have noticed a big drop in speeds after 19.00 hrs. I have done everything that the Talktalk rep asked me to do on their forum, but has yet I have had no reply back from them. Reading through the other Talktalk forum threads it appears the Reps are following a scripted procedure to follow , and do their best to keep going round in circles. Over wireless I get 30-40mbps during the day. After 19.00 this drops to 1.6mbps. I also have very high ping rates at the same time. Usually the ping rate is 20 ish at night it goes upto 130ish.
When I was with Plusnet I had no issues at all .
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4033252501 This is what I get now on wired .

Any advice will be gratefully received.

I'm on the Fibre Large product and although I get consistent speeds of about 70Mb/s I can confirm that some degree of congestion appears(latency variation) to be shown by the Thinkbroadband connection quality monitor.

Dealing with the reps on the TalkTalk community forum can indeed be frustrating. I don't know if you're aware of the current(? - apparently it changes) system but they answer the oldest thread(by the timestamp of the last thread post) first. It can typically take three days to respond and often they won't answer the question you asked - especially true if you ask about congestion - they claim they don't have access to traffic levels for fibre products.

If things don't improve for you I'm not sure what to suggest, terminating your contract early will probably cost you a lot of money. There are small price rises coming from Openreach on the 1st April 2015, this might force TalkTalk to raise prices and if they do they will have to notify their customers and offer them penalty free cancellation of their contract.

Keep us updated of how this issue turns out for you.

Move to A&A, it will cost a bit more but it will be well worth it.

A&A can work out very expensive, think the last time I looked I would of have to have paid around £60/month vs about £20/month for Plusnet.

Ultimately when you pick a budget ISP like TalkTalk then you can't really expect the same performance as PlusNet, which is also in the "low cost" bracket but not to TalkTalk's level. You get what you pay for and so trying to save money in this industry can often result in much worse performance since the ISP will struggle to have enough cash to invest in good capacity.

Some big providers like Sky Broadband and PlusNet maintain a better balance of price and performance than others, although if you want real quality then it's time to start paying a lot more and go with somebody like Aquiss, AAISP, IDNet or Zen Internet etc.

Ofcom rules usually do afford a three month window that allows new customers to exit from a contract penalty free if the speeds fall significantly below what was estimated for your line. But I'm not sure how this will work for you where the decrease is as a result of natural peak congestion, while off-peak speeds remain more reasonable. But if you did wish to escape then it might be worth seeing if you can argue this point using the Ofcom Speed Code 2010.

One way to tell where the congestion is doing a pathping to something like bbc.co.uk or if that's not supported on your version of windows a tracert.

Do that while the connection is running ok and one when its running slow and post them.
