Telephone sockets for SIP phone

Can anyone hazard a guess at how you're supposed to plug a phone into this router socket.. router has SIP capabilities, all set up and configured, "landline" number assigned on the account, router shows Status = Up, so all good to go.

Partner fancies the idea of us having a "landline phone" to ring mother.

It's been a long time since I had a landline so we bought a cheap £4 handset.

One end of the cable plugs into these sockets fine. But it's the "wrong way round" in as far as - the other end of the cable, is the one which would normally plug into a fixed line phone socket. Which then doesn't plug into the handset.

Do I need a cable which has the same gender/type of connector at both ends, or is the router supposed to have a different type of phone plugged into it - I had a quick look but all the phones I can see that are marketed as "VOIP phones" seem to have USB connectors for plugging into a PC.

So a bit mystified.. thanks..

l would have contemplated skype, does everything a phone line does last look the subscriptions offered a good amount of mins for a few quid a month.

I have Skype on my PC which I use for video calls, and I had it on my Windows mobile too but it only actually listened for incoming calls if you opened the app, it didn't seem to run in the background.

The attraction with the router is that you can configure a SIP account and then plug a phone into it. I wasn't going to bother with it but it's only 5.90 for 1000 landline minutes or something like that and partner spends a while on the phone to mother plus she could call in to a landline number instead of a mobile. So when I registered I picked a number that has the same local area code as we would have if we had a landline. I'll be intrigued to see if this actually works.

As far as I know you can't configure Skype as a SIP provider - that would make it ideal. It's brilliant for a plug and play install on PCs and mobiles though and the video calling and screen sharing is great, I use that with clients quite a bit.

My "landline" using a virtual number which is re-routed to a 3 PAYG SIM in an adapter that plugs into my good old-fashioned desk phone with a real dial is also up and running, but...

"... I picked a number that has the same local area code as we would have if we had a landline"

I didn't - I figure that if you're going to have a "silly" number you may as well have a "Scilly" number, so my new pretend landline number starts 01720. :smilet:
