Testing 5Gbps residential FTTP on Fibre Heroes network

Hi all,
After over 3 years of waiting last Tuesday (28th March) I finally got FTTP installed at my home for the first time and I am very lucky to be trialling a 5Gbps symmetric residential service on Full Fibre Ltd aka Fibre Heroes network.
I have written a blog about my experience with the connection so far https://fttppro.co.uk/testing-5gbps-residential-fttp-with-fibre-heroes/

Let me know if you have anything you would like me to test on the connection or any questions etc.

Just a general FYI. FullFibre Ltd. tell me this was just a specific network test with one user (they're also testing 10Gbps), rather than a proper product trial. At present, they aren't planning a 5Gbps product, but of course we do expect faster tiers in the future with XGS-PON networks.

Thanks Mark yes that’s right it is more testing the capability’s of their network at this stage and hopefully in the future will lead to multi gig products.

I would be interested to know if this connection shows that https://fast.com over-reports the measured throughput when compared against other monitoring such as taskman under Windows 10, a firewall such as OPNsense, or any real-time monitoring built into the router.

Great blog! Great website too!

If I'm reading correctly you're a fellow Shropshire resident? My small market town seems to have been forgotten but maybe one day we'll see FTTP.

Funny you should say that as I have observed this behavier both on the 5Gbps connection and also at lower speeds.
I will see about recording some videos to show this.

Shifnal mate.
Yeah Shifnal does seem to have been a bit forgotten in terms of pure FTTP there are pockets of Openreach FTTP and also a large presence of Virgin Media HFC.
I take it you have checked your postcode on bidb.uk ?

I don't even think we need to confirm fast.com is odd at this point 😄
Don't even get me started on fast.com and how Openrach engineers are forced to use it to record speeds in a property

I've been in dialogue with Openreach for three years and Mark did an article about our issues. I won't bore the collective with my sob story suffice it to say we're getting nowhere fast.

Edit - Forgot to say, yes I've been checking BIDB routinely, and One Network, but nothing showing.

Did not know that was a thing it is far from reliable for speed tests!
I would think they would use the BTW Speedtest

That’s a real shame but typical of Openreach I am surprised no altnets have built a network in Shifnal.

The problem with Shifnal is it comes under Shropshire and not Telford & Wrekin, therefore there has always been a historical issue of who will be funding things.

Cable routing in the past has come from Wolverhampton (via Albrighton and the Rabbit Run) and not directly from Telford, hence it's at the end of network runs.

Exascale exhibited interest, and I met with them, but it didn't proceed past the initial interest stage.

Part of our development has native Openreach FTTP and Openreach installed Fibre and CBTs to the remaining properties last summer but then it went quiet for "budget reasons" and we're still unable to place orders.

The cynic in me thinks that Openreach put infrastructure in the ground to dissuade alnets from getting involved but that's just my old age scepticism.

I think you're right that geography plays a part. We're so close to T&W but fall under Shropshire Council as you say. I know Openreach FTTP is delivered via Wellington (as I understand it) but can't speak for how Altnets would approach the challenge.

Have you spoken with Connecting Shropshire team run by Shropshire Council? as they may be able to help move things along.

I have seen that in the past where OR start a build and you are coils of fibre and or CBTs installed then it goes quiet so frustrating.

I've just checked my emails, to refresh my memory, and yes I spoke with them in Jan 2020 and the short answer was "Connecting Shropshire doesn’t currently have State Aid approval to provide funding to further improve the broadband infrastructure in <My postcode>"

It may be worth getting in touch with them again as things have changed since then not promising anything but worth a try.
