Thoughts on TP-Link TL-MR6400 ?

HI all,

I'm on an EO line and I recently found out that my mobile provider (Voxi) had an unlimited plan. I've connected my home devices to my phone to check out the speeds, and its been amazing! 20Mbps down and 13 Mbps from my iphone 6S to my laptop (when placed on the north facing window of my flat) . I've switch over to the unlimited plan this month and will try it out a bit more before disconneting my ADSL broadband connection for good.

Thinking ahead, I'd like to get a 4g/5g router and use that for the household rather than relying on my phone. I've narrowed down to the `TP-Link TL-MR6400` after reading a few reviews. I plan on getting an apple TV down the line, so I wanted something with a fast enough 5GHz capability to support screensharing. Just wanted to see if this is indeed a good option or is there something better than I'm unaware of. My budget is around 100-200 GBP.

For what its worth, I'm in Zone 2 London. If there's something better than the 35GBP/month Voxi plan, then I'm all ears!

Thank you!

You’d be better off getting something like a Huawei B535 off of eBay or Amazon. It supports 4G+ and decent 4G speeds. Very reliable hardware.

You can get Vodfafone unlimited max for £26 per month down to £13.50 after cashback if you can be bothered to claim it.

As TTJJ said, the B535 is a good choice, should be able to get one for less than £100 easily, then maybe invest in external directional antenna to get the best out of it depending on your location to the nearest mast(s)

Thank you all. I'll try out Voxi for 1-2 months and then look into a Vodafone 12month contract.

4 months ago, the openreach website updated and said that my area will be getting FTTP access. It doesn't say when, so I don't want to be locked into a 24 month contract on a mobile broadband. :)

Regarding the Huawei router - is it safe to run something from Huawei, given that the govt is banning any Huawei products for UK's 5g network? Wouldn't there be some security concerns there?

There’s no evidence either way which says that the consumer routers do or don’t do whatever or spy on whoever. It’s your decision to make. Huawei are the leader with this kind of equipment though and there’s not a great deal of choice at reasonable prices. I personally have no problem using their routers but I don’t think I’d choose a phone from them.

I got my B535 today.

Stats:
ADSL - 5Mbps / 0.8 Mbps
Voxi - iphone 6S - 20 Mbps / 15 Mbps
Voxi - iphone 11 - 95 Mbps / 22 Mbps
Voxi - B535 - 9 Mbps / 4 Mbps
And after I updated with the latest firmware
Voxi - B535 - 102 Mbps / 24 Mbps

Suffice to say, I am extremely happy!

Great news - better speeds than most can get over FTTC.

Hopefully it'll stay that way for you. Vodafone's network does seem to be very stable most of the time so it's likely it will, too.
