Three 5G - Brilliant download speed, but upload speed not so much?

Trying to find what is happening, i made numerous of speed tests these last few days. I set the smartphone to airplane mode, I just turned off cellular data, just to be sure it measures speed over wifi . I thing that the results are the same (flight mode, or just cellular data off). There is also a great USB Wifi 6 adapter(D-Link AX1800) i could try, but I'm afraid i would pay another 60€, just to verify this weird problem.

Hi , I've ordered this which is a lot cheaper if it will work in your laptop ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VF1G...=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_AAT16XBCFD4MYTSTRHXG

@eemix I put this little card in today after getting it and it is awesome . It has more than doubled my laptop's wifi speed.

Hello all,

I have given the Three 5G Home Broadband offering a try as well, intrigued by the speeds it seemed to offer to other users. After I got it set up, the same seemed to be true for me as well, on popular test applications/sites I am getting anywhere between 300-500mbits/s.

The problem is with the actual actual download speeds, not from test websites, which I measure at about 30-40mbits from reputable, bandwidth-rich websites such as Apple or Microsoft for larger files or any other reputable location for that matter. Basically all other websites that do not measure the download speed.

Either something funny is going on with my setup or Three are manipulating their QoS / speeds, prioritising such websites to show you how great their offering is when in reality, you are getting something completely different. All my tests are literally next to the router, so wifi connectivity is not playing a role here.

What is your experience? Happy to learn otherwise but this is what I've seen after a couple of days of use.
Sounds like you're mixing Bandwidth and download speed.
Speed tests (like the speedtest website or fast com) measure your bandwidth in Megabit per second. The unit is Mb/s

When you download files, the download speed is in Mega Bytes per second.
The unit is MB/s (capital B)

1Byte=8bits

When your bandwidth is 400Mb/s, your maximum download speed is (roughly) 50MB/s.

I reckon Three 5G can use 5G for upload too, I'm gonna make a post with my findings soon.
I am using Three 5G upload however it is very picky as to where it works. Only place within my house where it will connect to 5G for upload is in my loft. Anywhere else and it doesn't. Loft - 90/100 upload, room below - 10/20 upload via 4G.

I too have the same issue, downloads of 400+ but uploads sometimes at 0-1, however, when I connect to my VPN Service my upload speeds get close to 25-30mbps. Unfortunately my VPN provider doesn't have the right protocol for me to install it directly onto the ZTE MC801A so I have to use an old android phone as a tether. My download is affected with my solution (VPN and tether) but I still manage 200-250mbps and upload is maintained at 15-20. not an ideal fix because there is compromise. In my case its better than not having usable internet.

Appreciate this is an old post but this comment about better speeds over VPN caught my eye. My friends are building a B&B in Croatia and have a Teltonika RUT950 mobile router. We got some really slow speeds at times until one happened to enable a VPN on desktop and mobile.

Why is this? Do mobile providers typically throttle normal network traffic but can't throttle VPN because it's encapsulated and can't be sniffed?

It has always worked well on three for me robnicholson, using the free VPN (Proton).
Strangely, on the other 3 networks it makes no difference at all. 🤷‍♂️
(Top using Proton VPN)
