Three 5G faster with VPN?

Over the last few days my Three 5G has given me lots of issues with websites loading very slowly, netflix slow, youtube slow etc.. I typically get 300mb down / 20mb up, but it's happening more and more frequently now that everything goes slow again.

And then tonight I realized two things:
- when everything goes slowly, speedtest.net still gives me high speeds
- if I activate my work VPN, everything goes fast again

So is it a DNS issue or something else? How can I solve this? My modem is the first gen of Three 5G HUB (the Huawei 5G CPE Pro - locked to three and impossible to unlock). Would it change anything to change the modem? or any other suggestions?

@noway103 it looks like you are yet another victim of Three's traffic policies :)
For some changing the dns helped, for others changing the AP from 3Internet to three.co.uk (or viceversa) also helped and last but not least, as you have noticed yourself, vpns work as well. So give these options a try, see what works.

Changing the router is unlikely to help.

Thank you Lucian for always jumping in, we're lucky to have you in this forum!

So basically Three is slowing me down because I've used too much traffic (I get to roughly 1tb per month)?

I'll see how I can change the AP - the three modem is locked and I cannot see the options :(

@noway103

In my Huawei (CPE Win) the AP can be changed in "Mobile Network" section. See screenshot.

See if in Advanced -- Router section you have a VPN entry, if you do, then you could try to get an L2TP VPN from the likes of AAisp (or others) and see how it goes. AAisp VPNs are limited to 100Mbps btw.

Cloudflare WARP VPN is free, btw, you can install it on Android/Linux/Windows, maybe even iOS (not sure), use it to get past Three.

Thank you so much for this, I'll give it a try.

Some people report improvements with MTU changes too. Incidentally a VPN will usually alter the MTU of the data it encapsulates. So perhaps give that a shot?

Your router may or may not have an option to change MTU but if it has a bridge mode, then you set the MTU on the device the 5G router is connected to.

Yeah I did think possibly something with MTU, which is yours set to if you don't mind me asking?

I guess this is a typical example of ISP throttling. What VPN are you using btw? I am looking for one too. Bumped into a couple of options but not sure which one to opt for. I heard Ivacy is a good option to go with? What do you say?

I just run one off a VPS. 🙃

If that's not a possibility I can also recommend AAisp L2TP service for £10/m. Most routers support L2TP and one added advantage (but do double check) is that since AAisp are an actual ISP, then it's less likely you're going to have problems accessing the likes of Netflix which have been massively banning data centre IP ranges in recent years.
