Three 5g router and theee 5g phone

dommers

Casual Member
Hi, have read many different answers to this so hoping someone might be able to clear up with me if possible
.i am a long term three 5g phone and broadband customer. I get 8-900 mbps sometimes more on my iPhone 13. In the exact same position my zyxel router gets 100mbos max. In various positions. The previous router got 3-400 mbps (Zitel think)
Q. Does theee throttle broadband or does it use a separate net work for broadband? Q. Why does their latest router download slower than previous?

Thanks for any help

Dom

Where are you in the country? There are a few places where the Three Broadband network is (or at least was - I'm unsure if it's still active) an entirely separate operation to the Three mobile network. Parts of London were using the old Relish broadband network and parts of Swindon had their own unique wireless broadband service under the same brand too.

If you are connected to the same mobile network like the majority of the country is for both phone and broadband then there shouldn't be any difference. The only explanations would be the different APN between phone and broadband, or that you're connecting to a different cell site/band from one device to the other.

Since you mention having the ZyXEL Router you should be able to play with both the APN (3Internet vs three.co.uk vs 3Secure) and the bands you're using to find out.

Additionally, if you want to experiment further, you can swap your SIM cards over too and see what happens too.

To my knowledge Three don't do much in the way of throttling anymore, hence me thinking there's another explanation.

Thanks for reply wee bear. I am in Wimbledon south west London . Do you think it could be the sim that points to different mast ? I could try my phone one in the router I guess that should give an indication.. zyxel needs larger sim though and I struggled to fit last one wary of swapping..

So I found my phone apn: three.co.uk. Where do I find the setting on the Zyxel please wee bear? I went through the advanced setting but cannot see where set , it just shows

Oh it wasn't me you were replying to dommers it was Koda, but to change the APN on the Zyxel, just hit the edit icon which it at the bottom on your screen capture. (Modify) :)

(You're in the correct settings section) (y)

Clicking on the edit icon should bring up the above to let you edit the APN, when you're done just click on OK.

As Koda mentioned the various APN's are....

three.co.uk
3internet
3secure

3secure Details

Username: 3secure
Password: secure

For me though, it doesn't really make much difference which of the APN's I use, it won't do any harm to try them though. :giggle:

So both the phone and the router are three.co.uk apn. So it must be the sim. I can’t swap now as have important work tomorrow but will try after.

Yeah usually the default APN for routers is 3internet, but don't think it'll make much difference to be honest.

The 3Internet APN is generally designed to give you more of a traditional broadband experience with the likes of not being behind CGNAT for example. But I have definitely noticed speed differences between the two myself before. Though in my experience it's this broadband APN that usually runs a little slower than the mobile one.

Very interesting to see. I don't recall any Three router I have ever had before to not be pre-set to the 3Internet APN. Zyxel included.

Ah to be clear I took that from the speediest config ..
