Three: Adult Filters and SSL errors (Seeking advice)

I'm running the notoriously well-reviewed Netgear LB1110 with a Three SIM on B3 in router mode. My devices regularly run into SSL timeout errors, e.g. music streaming, payment websites and others. I use a VPN which somehow solves these problems. Clearly doesn't work for iPlayer. I suspect it's a DNS issue. Since joining the forum, I switched out my Netgear R7000 AP to a TP-Link Omada network thinking it'd solve the problem - it hasn't.

RSRP-73
RSRQ-10
RS-SINR10

Are these SSL issues down to Three adult content filtering? Or, is it a signal issue? All the indicators seem to be within an acceptable range. I've considered an XPOL antenna, but these TS-9 connectors won't do it justice.

I appreciate the help.

Not a signal issue, or a router issue, it's an issue with Three's network. I don't think anyone knows why, but they have some internal routing 'quirks' which cause intermittent and strange issues.

There's no point in trying to fix it - it's just impossible and engaging with customer services isn't going to get you anywhere. Simple answer is you can either wait (some of us waited years), you can use a VPN constantly (but then you run into other issues with blocking etc) or you can switch providers.

Alongside that, your router is only a Cat 4 router so if you were to upgrade to a newer one such as Huawei B535 or B818 you'd likely experience significantly better speeds if the network isn't congested in your area.

I used to have that problem on three, with a B818-263 modem .. until I reduced the MTU and it just went away.

It only happens either in the evening (when I struggle to get 2Mbps) or early in the morning when I'm hammering my connection (getting 100Mbps+) either way there is no bandwidth left every single time it shows its face.

From this I get the impression Three's "internal routing 'quirks' which cause intermittent and strange issues" happen when your mast is overly contended and are exacerbated further still when there isn't enough backhaul.

Neither of which three are prepared to do anything about.

I had the same problem, as do many people around here. Random and not reproducible. Only fix for me was VPN at the expense of additional slowdown, expense and inconvenience.

Might be worth adding that changing DNS aggravated the problem. And iOS kept complaining about "network blocking encrypted DNS".

I ended up switching to Lebara, and everything now works as expected.

LB1110 worked unreliably from the get-go four years ago. CAT 4 is quite outdated; you're right.

Good to hear everyone's experience. I'll stick with my current set up for now.
