Three broadband dropping speeds

You guys must be right and I am wrong blaming Three. The "good" voice SIM in the P10 4G old phone gives me same slow speed as the "bad" broadband SIM. The Cube gives me bad speed on both cards too. It is the equipment after all. I will think about 5G new router. It is some substantioal chunk of money. If I could test one before buying... If I get 300-400mbps on it on 5G here I will seriously think ditching VirginMedia £55 340Mbps. It is very reliable and fast but Three is less than half price.
Watch out moving to mobile broadband, it can turn bad without notice as more users pile up, especially with Three... My usual advice is if your broadband is not broken, don't fix it.

Re routers, you can try with a second hand cheapo 5G smartphone instead and do some USB tethering, but you'll prolly be limited to 200-300 Mbps (as most only feature USB2).

We dumped Virgin for 3 several years ago, Got sick of the prices going up constantly and fighting to get a good deal every year was like pulling teeth

Saying that Virgin were good where we live only maybe 2 or 3, 1 day outages in 10 years, and rock solid speeds.

But being a tight northerner cost trumped reliability and we moved to Mobile broadband, Luckily we are in an undersubscribed area, so get good speeds, but maybe once every couple of months up till now we have had to move the router from one side of the house to the other when a tower went down, and you had to do a rain dance to get it in the perfect position.

Now we have a local 5G towers speeds are perfect 400 down 70 up. and at £17 a month for unlimited I am happy

But would I change again with hindsight. Probably not, When you rely on the broadband for work Virgin was just rock solid, would probably have 3 as a backup though.

You don't have to be a Northerner to be tight, or to get cheesed off with Virgin's dreadful billing. I don't have a reliable 5g signal here, and the way the local authority is treating Three's monopole planning applications I don't see it happening soon. But I'm reasonably content with Three/Smarty 4g with better than 100mb/s for most of the day, slipping to around 20-30mb/s in the evening which is still fast enough to stream HD content. This has been fairly consistent for two years, and upgrading from a B525 to a B818 gave a big increase in speeds. I'm currently paying £16 pm, with discounts working out at around £13.50 over a year. My neighbour uses Virgin 100mb/s and she's paying £39 pm.

I do get a good signal through the dividing wall but I've never broached her for her wi-fi password. She's a great neighbour but territorial and I suspect requesting that I share her connection would not go down well.

Make her an offer she can't refuse ;)
