Three broadband SMTP server

Trying to find the correct settings for the SMTP Server on the Three network. smtp.three.co.uk:587 requires STARTTLS and once I set that up, Thunderbird moans about certificate mismatch.

Anyone out there who got SMTP to work?

Didn't even know they offered this service, but having had a quick look that hostname is just an alias to Microsoft's Office365 so try to tuse that directly: smtp.office365.com

Code:
~]$ host smtp.three.co.uk
smtp.three.co.uk is an alias for smtp.office365.com.

PS: are you sure that's not just for their employees? Really don't see anyone gifting O365 accounts.

looks as if Three don't have one

I will just go for a free third party SMTP provider, plenty of choice around

3 as an ISP don't offer email like with BT etc. Best use a free one and use their smtp server to connect to.

"Proper" ISPs normally have SMTP servers that is reachable for their customers (don't need a full blown e-mail service anyway as I have my own domain name). Looks as if 3 haven't bothered providing a SMTP server as most of their customers probably use mail apps.

So, I just signed up with smtp2go where you can send 1000 e-mails per month for free. Had some minor issues but excellent online chat support.

I just got a £1 VPS from 1&1 (IONOS). Only 1 CPU, 512 MB RAM, but perfect as VPN and SMTP server.

😲 shock horror

Proper ISP's do a lot of stuff Three don't! They also interfere with traffic against net neutrality rules to render websites inaccessible for no good reasons other than "we don't like them".
