The plans that include them are quite expensive, do you travel enough to be able to justify spending that every month?

Direct from Three a value plan is £31 a month so over 2 years it’s just over £600 (with the deal they got on) vs £546 for the Lite plan.

I go one around 3 long trips a year, 2 usually in the UK and one abroad so spending what would be an extra £58 isn’t right for me. A local SIM might cost me £10-£20 when I’m away.

The only way it would work out good value would be if you’re paying for Paramount. You get that ‘free’ for 12 months on the Value plan which works out at an £83 saving.

Oh and you can actually pick up the Lite plan from 3G.co.uk for £22 on a 24m (or £23 for 12m) pushing the difference to £76.

I’m sure there’s other site around that can match or beat that as well.

Then I think you’re probably better off not taking one of those plans out for something that might happen. We’re quite a way off Vodafone making any chances to plans on Three lines.

I'd be more concerned about them throttling the data than removing it all together. Using Three to roam in the USA is fantastic, with no noticeable issues beyond what you'd expect when out in remote areas.

My O2 SIM wouldn't even load Googlemaps and the missus paid EE £25 for a month of roaming and had a similarly poor experience.

My experience was the complete opposite of yours!

O2 and EE were great and not throttled at all. I didn’t even bother to Switch my Three SIM on.

I have heard tales of O2 being iffy in the States so only tried it once. It connected to AT&T's 5G but Googlemaps simply wouldn't run. I flicked to the Three SIM which again connected to AT&T but this time showing as 4G+ and all was fine straightaway. The tower was within sight less than half a mile away.

I was surprised by the EE performance, the missus doesn't use much data so for her to complain it really must have been bad. Interestingly she did use up nearly her entire data allowance for the month, so there could be shenanigans at play either by her or EE but in the end it's just easier to agree with her assessment that it's all EE's fault.

well part of the conditions outlined by the CMA is to maintain all plans and pricing for 3 years.
It says "commit to retain certain existing mobile tariffs and data plans for at least 3 years", not all. I can't find detail on what these are, but it sounds extremely limited.

The price per GB of mobile data tends to go down over time, so even with these very limited protections, people will still pay more than they would have done due to less competition. And they only last for 3 years, whereas the competition impact will last forever unless a new entrant comes in, which seems unlikely.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I am on a Plus plan, didn't have any speed restrictions at then start of the year. We had planned to go back but might skip going back for the next 4-years or so. 😳
