Three Speed Tests

Typical speeds for Three around Epsom this morning, no doubt unusable by about 10am… 🫣

Dorking faring much better though.

Final test to round off my brief venture onto Three resulting in a trip through their nemesis area… Clapham Junction!

To be fair, this is heads and shoulders above how Three used to be here, as late as about 2016 there wasn’t even ANY signal around platform 17! 😱

Safe to say I’ll personally be staying put on Vodafone/O2 based networks for now, but it is encouraging to see Three’s made a lot of progress overall compared to how they were not that long ago.

A shame that their app and weird voicemail system lets them down, as well as their mind-bendingly inconsistent network coverage/speeds (I think I’ve seen both the best and the worst pings for example on Three, similarly both the fastest and the slowest speeds).

However, if it works for you I’d say go for Smarty as the app is lightyears ahead of the Three app. Same with the network, if you’re in a good area for their service then I’d say fair enough, but if you move postcodes too often throughout the day then some say maybe not - certainly without a dual SIM phone!

Anyway, my two pence worth thrown into the mix there.

Smarty's app alot better mainly because it's actually an app!

The only way to bypass the forced name recording setting on voicemail is to set a personal greeting or PAC to another network.

My contract ends on 22nd November.

It was originally a black friday deal from Fonehouse, A13 4G with 30GB "advanced plan" (the same as the lite plan really) for £15 a month. The A13 was included with the plan and not on any sort of device finance. Phone also came unlocked

I then upgraded the plan to Unlimited for £3 extra a month. (Not a removable addon)

I bought the A54 December 2023 mainly for 5G hotspot

Now that the contract will end later this year, I will most likely move to Smarty because for it's value, better app, free and fixed roaming since they broke mine, same network and easy plan changes. Or possibly 1P for better rural coverage *no annoying 3G only areas*. Ill aim to find a deal on black friday which is 29th November.

Ookla wouldn't let me share this but here goes. A Three result from the plaza bit on Niddrie Mains Road, Edinburgh, EH16 near the big Home Bargains. The mast I was connected to is the one behind the White House (2255)

Usually I'd censor the coordinates but I've told you exactly where it is, so who cares.

An interesting one from yesterday when I was over on Arran. Was sitting in a cafe at the time. Not too bad considering my phone said I was connected to a mast 22 km away on the mainland, the one near Portencross to be exact.

Yeah that’s the one.

You really need to take a trip over there at some point. Arran’s not got a lot of masts so like with me on Monday you sometimes get a better signal from the mainland.

You can even get some 5G on EE in Brodick again from the mainland.
