so im hoping someone can help i have just got three mobile broadband due to having 4-6mb download on broadband no fibre at my address. I have got up to 45mb on 4g but it is patchy signal. They gave me the zte mc801a even though i ordered the Zyxel NR5103E so i guess my first question is should i send back and get the Zyxel NR5103E? but my main question is it seems at least i am about 1 mile away from 5g signals? postcode is tr14 8rf and im wondering if i get a good external antenna and mount it as high as possible would i be able to get 5g at all?

Going by the postcode provided Three are "fixing an issue" in the area. Might be a short term thing but I've had that for almost 2 years now.

Looking at mastdata you could be in a poor signal area for Three. Can you pop in a SIM from another network with a decent amount of data allowance to test?

I use a £35 secondhand Sercomm 4G now, used a ZTE MF286D 4G and last week played with an NR5103E 5G. I'm 2km from the mast and got one or zero bars of 5G on that router.

Result? All gave around the same download speeds around 150Mbps on Three and 200 on the routers that would accept a Lycamobile SIM.

I guess I'm concluding that you should return the router before 30 days. I think you could spend a lot on external antennae for the Three network and perhaps be no better off. Get a cheapo 4G router and a Scancom data SIM on a faster network.

According to BIDB all four networks have indoor 4G at that postcode, the only one with any 5G coverage is EE but that's not very good (probably outdoor only). The only way to be sure is to get a cheap 1-month MVNO SIM on each network and try them out, your Three router should work with any SIM since it's illegal to supply locked routers nowadays.

Looks like there is one 5G cell site the other end of town.

Is it a macro site or a road side pole? If it’s a pole you’ll probably struggle to get it.

Any man made or natural obstructions between you and the cell site?

Hi chris i have no idea where this cell site is? is it the one in pool? i dunno where the tower is i struggled understanding cell mapper as i couldnt see 5g anywhere on it but i know i can get it about 1 mile away

logged into my router notice ive got -93db signal strength, could i see improvement with 4g external atenna? even if i cant get 5g?

Take the router, hold it outside your windows, maybe on a broom stick or something, do a couple of speed tests and compare with tests on previous position, see how it fares. If it's significantly better, than it may be worth the hassle and expense of an external antenna.

Using CellMapper and the Three coverage map, your nearest 5G cell site is in between Redruth and Mount Ambrose where the railway line starts to curve off to the right.

It is the Band 1,3,20 site not the 3,20 site as far as I can see.

Update - I have found it, there is a pole of wonder on Cardrew Way, it's not the tallest. You'll do really well to get Band 20 off that in your location.

what about outdoor routers? rather than antennas?
Yeah, they are usually good, there are quite a few, depending on your needs. I usually prefer them, as they have better performance in many cases.

Going by the EE coverage map, it looks like they have a couple of 5G sites closer to you in Pool and Roscroggan.

I don't know if they are Band 78 or 1 though.

Pool is very close, good news my friend came over with EE in a window he got 3 bars of signal and was getting 120mb dl and 30mb up, i put it in my thee router and i got 135 and 10 with -85 dbm so looks like EE is the way forward! and surely in the loft should yield even better results, without having to mess around with external antennas, unless chris you think a directional one would work?
