When they say every site is to get a 700mhz upgrade, is that for 5G or 4G or both? Will some sites use it only for 4G whilst others for both 5G and 4G? Shame it doesn’t seem to specify, or give a timetable on it.

Makes for pretty interesting reading!

DSS is a little bit of an intriguing addition. Presumably negates the need for substantial tower reconfiguration and upgrades. I was thinking that 4G spectrum could be bolstered with ‘unused’ 5G, but the frequencies just don’t work out unfortunately. I’m assuming it’ll just be B28 700mhz which’ll become a 4G/5G frequency.

What I can’t figure out though, is why DSS seems to get quite so much flack over in the States. Have read quite a lot about 5G being slower than 4G when done over DSS... is it simply down to a lack of available 5G bands on say, Verizon, making CA 4G faster?

Besides that though, small cells peaked my interest too. They’re far easier on the eye than regular arrays/monopoles, might make planning permission a little easier…

They’ll likely have 700MHz 4G and 5G on all towers. The great thing about DSS is you can use the same set of antennas and equipment for both 4G and 5G. It’s basically the quickest possible way of throwing together a 5G network.
