Three's 3G Switch-Off

The wording has now changed to “our 3G network has now been phased out across most of UK” in case no one else has noticed yet on the checker.

The phase 8 PoW seems to still have 3G active here. I don't know why. Since there's 3 sectors for N78 5G and the usual 4G setup.

Reaches further than the 3G does. Maybe it'll get turned off with any new updates in the future

Looks like 3 are decommissioning even more 3G only sites now. In my area they decommed 2 before the 3G shutdown officially started. According to the coverage map they've now decommed 1 more, and there's only outdoor 4G showing so no 4G/5G upgrade either. This one's in an urban area and the nearest 4G site is over 600m away, so it seems like many sites could be at risk.

If this is their attitude to coverage and capacity, it gives me even less hope for the merger tbh.

Seems that the 3G that's live is from the nearest PoW here still. Doesn't make sense why they didn't switch it off, given the PoW on 5G has excess of over 1gbps download speeds (not that I can test it myself as I don't have a 3 SIM / SIM on the network)

Checked the map to see if there's a update, appears that most of Dunstable no longer have 3G however there are quite a few areas of Luton which are hanging onto 3G.

No updates on 5G coverage on the map though.

That is unusual, than again a lot of businesses make decisions that don't make sense to the average Joe Public but somehow make sense to those in charge and this is probably another example.

For here in Oldham it’s quite strange no matter where I am forcing 3G gives straight up no service yet it still says they’re switching a mast off

Nice catch - they must have updated in the past few days - 10 days ago there weren't any shutdown dates for Oldham area, though Bolton was showing as 18th Nov at that time. Will pull the latest tomorrow and see what's what
I’ve been looking at Manchester City centre and Trafford areas so far no switch off dates. We got just over a month left of 2024, do you think they will actually be able to fully switch off 3G across the country?

I'm in Leeds and the three coverage checker just states that 3g is no longer available in the area

Unironically it's like the only thing allowing 3G coverage in this area now. Makes no sense for them to keep it turned on, but obviously there's a reason..

There's no date on the checker for it to be turned off either.

Sadly one of those things we never understand :(

From the data, it looks like the Oldham one is just a single site towards Denshaw - feels like 4G eNB 12921 (Hill Top Lane).

In general for the past couple of months there's been dates for a fair few sites/areas of 18th Oct, which turned to 18th Nov and now those are showing as 18th Dec. Still far from the remainder of the 3G coverage through...

Well there was me thinking my 3G was switched off, alas no, my area still has it, the checkers a state I still have it, and when I went to test Id Mobile in my kitchen the other day I only got 3G 🤣. To be honest I’ve left my Id Mobile line turned off mostly and will probably cancel it, 1P Mobile has been so good I’ve just forgotten about it and used my phone as a phone. EE’s coverage nailing it in my area these days.

Only issue I had was when my fibre went down due to an outage recently and I was using my mobile hotspot on the 5G, but the damn works laptop kept disconnecting grrrr.. that’s what I want really is decent mobile and the ability to use it as a backup for work, 5G speeds being very helpful with that.
