TikTok **COULD** be getting banned in the US

Considering @jon1 was talking about it, this deserves its own thread.

The US is currently trying to pass through a law stopping app stores from carrying applications controlled by certain foreign adversaries which includes TikTok which is owned by ByteDance which is partially controlled by the Chinese government afaik.

If you want to learn about the situation so far, I'm going to link to the Mental Outlaw video on this as well as a KreekCraft video (notable content creator that managed to make the Made for Kids bs on YouTube a while back harm creators a lot less).

I honestly want to get it banned but at the end of the day, TikTok is people's careers and I don't like the fact that we'll end up stopping many people's careers.
What I don't understand is why people have given up their 'proper' jobs to start businesses solely on TikTok.

They must be getting a few sleepless nights now wondering what's going to happen to their livelihood if there's an app ban.

The old saying that you shouldn't put all your eggs in the one basket is rather appropriate here I think.

It's careers built on enabling and promoting a harmful web site designed and optimised using specialist professionals & tools and millions of $$ to turn you from a human being into a mindless doom scrolling machine, stealing your time and focus, alienating you, fscking up your mental health and self esteem, turning as much of you as possible into good old cash.
Same goes for the rest, they are as harmful, if not even more.

I won't even get into more perverse topics, such as using social media & tools to shift mentalities, swing votes and ultimately democracies.

Nuke them all from orbit, I say, every single one of them.

Good riddance, I used to use Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter etc frequently but now only use Twitter infrequently to resolve issues with companies as I prefer to use Telegram or WhatsApp to communicate with friends and colleagues indeed if you take my employer as a example although we're encouraged to use a app built for the business to request annual leave etc, we also have to WhatsApp the manager.

Tik Tok is simply encouraging a lazy generation to do nothing but post useless videos so the sooner it's banned here too the better.

I don't understand why the focus is really on TikTok. Why not similar focus on Temu, AliExpress, Shein, Banggood, WeChat, CapCut, Meitu, Shareit whonare no doubt building up considerable data on consumer habits outside of China. And in the hardware arena they went after Huawei but how about Xiaomi, RealMe, Honor, HikVision.... Not to mention consumer electronics like Haier, Hisense, TCL... And cars.... The list goes on.

So why just TikTok?

Uninstalled most of them, Reddit is still there because I do find it kind-of useful

It's pretty amazing how boring being on your phone is if you enable the Grayscale filter in iOS settings, if you need proof that it's hooking into parts of your brain to keep you there with the colors

I think most people do post across YouTube and TikTok but TikTok is definitely more successful. I have all my content creation stuff in either YouTube or Odysee (with the auto upload feature).

One of the YouTube Shorts creators I watch the most is mryeester and he got started from TikTok. He has obviously had success on YouTube and collaborated with people in long-form videos such as Austin Evans but I would imagine it's much harder to do that outside of the tech space.

Worth noting that CapCut is owned by ByteDance and will be likely affected here (since all apps by ByteDance will be gone in the US within 6 months once the law passes since they're definitely not going to sell up).

HikVision is still very much in use here in the UK from the emails I get from Big Brother Watch.

Out of all of those, I feel like AliExpress is the least likely to have anything happen to it, isn't as controversial as the rest and still is pretty well known. I miss Huawei though ngl, they were doing really good things in the tech space.

I'm fairly light compared to some people: YouTube, Twitch (hardly use), Sharkey (although I follow like 100-ish people in my timeline), Discord (I signed up recently due to moderation concerns I had with a Matrix space I run that also gets mirrored to Discord, only in 4 servers so far and I plan to keep it low), FluffyChat (Matrix client), Signal and WhatsApp.

Because TikTok algorithms purposefully set the most destructive videos that will undermine the fabric core ideals of the west and set them as viral videos.

[admin note: removed offensive comment]

It also sets videos on pro-islam and pro-migrant viral trying to undermine the core ideals of west and bring it down. It is a Psyop application run the Chinese government to try and bring down the west (and that is not paranoia it has been deemed to be a fact. This is why the American government wants it banned).

I cannot wait till it is gone. And the fact it is Democrats trying to ban it for these reasons shows its not the destructive "right-wingers" thinking this way about it. It is an evil app that twists the minds of the youth.

Is there any way that you can add some links to what you're saying to prove your point? Some of it I struggle to believe.

From normal conversation to worse than an Anti-5G Facebook group in one post 🥇

Any sources please? I can’t wait till it’s gone either and some of what you said is probable, but if it’s proven to be fact I’d be interested to read up on it

Because it competes with Youtube & Meta for your time - and did something different, and did it better that they then copied.

It's essentially Vine. I don't get the hate for it other than who owns it, and even then it's usually from a place of hypocrisy (looking at what products you use, who you support, what you watch, and who they're owned by.....)

I would recommend you look up how algorithms work. Just like the US Senator who complained all he got was dancing children - bad news Mr Senator - it's showing you that because you keep engaging in the videos.

If you keep going on rage bait videos, and watching / commenting / sharing - then it's going to push you further down those avenues.

I miss Huawei though ngl, they were doing really good things in the tech space.
Copying Cisco, repeatedly, and outlandishly in a super obvious way.
But because they had nice phones / good 5g tech, that gets a pass? I agree I miss having Huawei as a vendor - but realistically they had done some pretty shady practices to get a foothold of the market. "Thats Business".
I suspect killed after they started taking Apple market share in the US.

I really don't understand the logic here at all. Goes back to people being china=bad. Interesting how Trump has changed his tune now it's on the cards, no?

It's just a political football to be kicked around - the whole thread is pretty concerning though.

If you like it, use it. If you don't like, it. Dont use it. Simples.

What I don't understand is why people have given up their 'proper' jobs to start businesses solely on TikTok.

No different to people who started Twitch / YouTube careers. Look what happens everytime they change TOS.
