Time to move on from TalkTalk, but where to?

I'm close to the end of my contract with TT (thank heavens), and am now trying to decide where to go.

I did have Plusnet & The Phone Coop as options, but the advice I have been given so far has turned me against them, especially Phone Coop as I understand that they use Opal/TalkTalk. If this is true them I will be subject to TT's spying software, which is one of the main reason I want out. Similarly I'm not overly been to have PlusNet, as they are effectively BT by another name.

I am on LLU with TalkTalk and a non-geographic phone no. I would very much prefer to retain this number. Because Phone Coop piggy-back Opal I imagine it could well be the easiest & quickest changeover but the spying thing, apart from TTs legendary incompetence, is a very big issue.

I have no trust in BT either so, unless anyone can convince me otherwise, TT & Plusnet are dead in the water.

My preferences are

UK based support, (reliable, knowledgeable & readily available)
Phone & BB package, rather than separate providers
Up to 25/30gb per month, may be a bit less as I don't stream films etc. but I do use an
internet radio most evenings for a couple of hours.
As quick & hassle free a changeover as possible
Retention of existing phone number if possible.
Cost is a factor, obviously, but I don't expect it to be as cheap as TT, (currently about £30 per month all inc).

That's about it, (don't want much do I:rolleyes:)

Based on above, have you thought about o2?

UK based tech support 24/7, phone line and BB bundles and a fairly reasonable cost with special offers etc. You can get a monthly discount if you are a mobile phone customer too.

Also, if you go via this link: http://www.topcashback.co.uk/o2-broadband/ you will be able to get quite a big chunk of cashback.

I would of recommended us (of course!) but we dont offer line rental to residential customers.

First thing to do is find out who covers you.

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/checker/

If you don't get a result for your phone number than that might be a result of the LLU line (usually happens if you haven't had a BT line before / new build homes).

If you're on TalkTalk's fully LLU line then migration away could result in extra downtime and some additional costs, which varies depending upon where you go (make sure to speak with the ISP that you eventually pick before doing anything). Also check out this, although it's getting a bit old now and we'll update it with a new version in Jan 2012.

I don't get a result for my number, either here or on any of the sites of the ISPs that I've tried it on.
I expect there to be extra costs, which is a cross I'll have to bear, but it'll be worth it in the end to get away
from a company whose whole ethos I loathe.
Any idea when in January it will be updated? If it's fairly early I may hang on before I make a final decision, but having read your current assessment of o2 & that of the InvicTel rep They are worthy of further inspection.

We do a 100GB LLU based phone and broadband service based on a 3 month min term.

Thanks for the interest. I have considered you & your Family 24 unlimited has certainly caught my eye.
Are you able to give me an idea of the pros & cons of moving to Titan please

Our 24Mbs unlimited plan has a pro of being totally unlimited so you can let your hair down and not clock watch, it also has no traffic management.
Cons it currently has an activation fee. Our family 12Mbs unlimited plan has no connection fee ;)
If you can PM me your post code i shall do a quick check for you.

Enter your postcode here........
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
That will tell you which services are available.

If you then click on "Locality" it will tell you which exchange you are connected to

If you then enter your towns detail here
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

It will give further info on your exchange and products

SamKnows

Thanks for the pointer. I've been on SamKnows a few times and it only gives:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
BT Wholesale SDSL
BT FTTC
AOL LLU
Bulldog LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Virgin Media (Cable)

which is not particularly helpful, as it doesn't give any actual ISPs, except TT, Sky & Virgin

TT is obviously dead in the water. I was with Virgin (Cable) before TT and didn't like the way they
worked. Sky are too pushy and I don't want to be pestered in to taking up their 960,000,000 tv channels
that broadcast nothing but mind numbing drivel, as the BBC & ITV also do as well.

I'm about 750m from my exchange so generally get a decent connection on it (SLBWD)

At the moment I'm actively looking at Titan and a couple of others
Thanks again.

Our Family Value and Business Value package ranges are based upon our interconnects with Opal (TalkTalk as you refer). These are then deployed into our Interconnects via VLAN/L2TP hand-offs.

If this is so then, much as Aquiss look very attractive, the Opal/TalkTalk link puts me straight off them

New ISP

I've pretty well made up my mind who to transfer to.
I've been in touch with IDNet and more or less, subject to further info, decided to go with them.
More expensive than TT, (but then can you get cheaper than them, and that's not compliment) , but hopefully worth
it.

Amendment to ISP

I need to make a correction to this. Blame it on age, but I've been referring to IDNet, when I should have made it ICUK.

IDnet v ICUK

Thanks Mark. I've been looking at both IDnet & ICUK and things are finely balanced, so I think I need to sleep on it.
No particular hurry as I get nearer everyday to end of contract and a lower penalty, which has to be well below £10 into TTs coffers by now.
