Not sure if this will work for everybody but a friend of mind got a nice speed boost from their mobile broadband connection to Three (3) by disabling GPRS on his phone (apparently it also works for some PCMCIA cards and maybe even USB adapters too).
How you do this varies depending on your phone/hardware, but it usually involves trying to force "UTMS only" mode or something similar (usually found under a network settings area for the Cellular link). You may have to do some hunting.
This works because most 3G cards and phones are set to default back to GPRS when the 3G connection is considered too weak by the hardware, however a weak 3G signal is often still far better than a strong and slow GPRS one.
Do be careful though, EXTREMELY weak 3G signals without a GPRS backup could cause the connection to completely cut out, which is the obvious downside to this tweak. I’m also not sure how or whether it works with newer HSDPA/HSUPA technologies although I’d imagine it can.
