Tiscali Block P2p??

HI,

I went live on October 19th with Tiscali.

No real problems to speak of Migration went ok.

However, i notice that Tiscali block P2P ports between the hours of 6pm and 11pm. Is that correct? I was told, by the Tiscali sales team, that heavy P2P users would get three e-mails after being identified and that they would be "restricted" if heavy useage continued. This is also stated in the Tiscali FUP. So why they blocked?....oir haven't they updtaed the FUP yet.

And before someone harps on about the merits of P2P plaese dont get on your soapbox it's about Port blocking not the rights or wrongs of P2P. And dont jump to conclusions either. I use Sopcast which uses P2P for streaming. I'm not downloading copyright material.

God!!...i don't know why i even have to explain that!!....but thats the unfortunate world we live in.

It seems to be the latest trend with ISPs, a lot of the major providers restrict P2P now, AOL have just started doing it, Virgin Media ADSL will be soon if they are not already.

It's getting harder and harder to find an ISP that doesnt. :hrmph:

My Tiscali connection is blocking legitimate P2P file exchanges. I have had no warning that I am a heavy user, and no explanation. They don't deny it though when you call up. Why should I pay for a broadband connection that is limiting what I use? Fair use policies are a load of rubbish, if Tiscali can't handle the amount of traffic through its servers then it should invest in better infrastructure, not make us suffer. I did a port scan earlier and almost all ports are being blocked and torrents throttled. Outrageous.

your right about investing but the sad thing is that they are more interested in making money than they are giving good service just like most ISPs

It's incredible the amount of complaints on this site about Tiscali. Somebody described them as an ISP for the e-mail and Web surfer, but totally useless for today's digital generation. Couldn't put it better myself.

It's not just Tiscali, all the major ISPs are guilty of overselling their services to some degree. They just want to cram as many users onto their existing networks as possible. They only consider expanding when they absolutely have too.

I find it is the smaller suppliers who actually care about the quality of the service they supply, they have to hang on to every customer they can get...

If 1000 customers left Tiscali, they could live with it, losing 1000 customers would be a big problem for a smaller ISP.

actually some small ISPs dont care either (see Fast4 forum) however l do agree on the most part.
