Tiscali cancellation

Being new to Broadband & having happily just signed on the dotted line with Tiscali on their talk & surf package i was starting to panic after reading all the negative press, not only on this forum but on many others. Thankfully though i was within my 14 day cooling off period after registration but still expecting all sorts of problems in cancelling.
To their credit though cancelling was no problem & i wasn't even asked why ?
Anyway a big thanks to all who vented their anger on the forum as i think i've saved myself a lot of hassle...now to find another isp !

There is only so long you can ask the same question and get the same answer before you stop asking!

If i can......Why did you sign up?
Was it just because they appear cheaper?

Price wasn't the issue...ignorance was !
Never looked at any forums other than broadband isp websites.
Also was looking to add a phone bundle as the wife & kids like to talk too much !
Can you recommend any ? Looking at Nildram at the mo ?

you were lucky

You were lucky i have been with tiscali over 2 years and it has been a nightmare trying to cancel them. They even suspended my account and when i queried it with their billing dept. got told that they didnt know why perhaps it was for technical reasons the tech staff didnt know why either so there was nothing for it but to complain to OFCOM.
I even got told by a couple of their reps in the cancellation dept that tiscali didnt give out mac codes and that as phone line was tied to them i couldnt get away in a hurry. I replied that if necessary i would cancel my existing phone line and put a new one in.

So well done on steering clear of tiscali.

I was with Tiscali for a year or so, until a year ago. I always found their performance pretty good, since the connection was full duplex.

I'm now receiving threatening letters from them asking for five months' rental after they ignored two requests from me to provide a transfer key and cancel my account. They eventually cancelled the account because it wasn't being used - I'd moved house. So now they're charging me for not using a service I'd cancelled. Nice.

I have written to them by snail mail explaining the situation, and I hope to be able to report a happy resolution. But until I do, I would advise people to steer clear of them altogether.

Beware They are notorious for still charging your credit card long after you cancel . Check your statements each month to ensure they dont do to you as they have done to countless others.

I have tried to be reasonable with them but they have now refused to drop the demand for the £100 for the months I didn't use on the grounds that their records don't show I cancelled - which they obviously wouldn't. They apparently don't realise that that by treating their customers this way, they write off that amount many times.

I'm happy to report that the tally of people I've been able to warn off has now reached two.

Update: avoid Tiscali

So eventually, what happens is that, irrespective of the merits of your case, Tiscali sell you to a league of gentlemen called Fredrikson International, which is a debt collection agency who use the usual scare tactics to get you to pay up pronto.

As an agency, they have no interest in learning the merits of the case either. They allow you to pay online - do not do this, because you will be handing them your card details.

At this point, you're probably best advised to pay up, but without admitting liability. The alternative is to defend yourself in the county court.

Make sure you get the cheque back. You can then continue to chase Tiscali. The only real option is the small claims court, but frankly, I don't hold out much hope. The best you can therefore do is make sure that no-one you know ever signs up with Tiscali again. So far, I calculate that in recovering their £125, Tiscali have lost almost £1000 in subscriptions from people who have asked me for ISP advice.

I actually found the base service okay. If they'd treated me as a potential returning customer, instead of an enemy, this might have turned out very different.

Finally, to Vodafone, and anyone else thinking about buying Tiscali: there's no value in the operation: you're buying the customers. Please take extra care of them.

Hmm, I agree there are much better provders out there just stay clear of Tiscali, I think they can be a complete waste of time and hassle.
