tiscali (dis)connection problems

Hi

Hope someone can help cos so far doesnt seem like tiscali can!

I am on tiscali 150 service - an "always on" connection that keeps disconnecting. It doesnt seem to make a difference whether I am downloading, surfing or idle - it just disconnects with no warning. Could be anything between a few seconds and an hour or so from connecting.

I have checked and double checked all the usual suspects as detailed on tiscali help pages. I have tried to phone their technical support but given up after waiting more than 10 minutes on more than one occasion. I have e-mailed them but the replies I have received so far ( up to 2 days later!) have either repeated what is on the help pages (which I have already tried) or made no difference whatsoever. I do, however, keep on trying and am awaiting a reply to my latest mail.

If it's any help I am running windows XP - Sagem modem ( which I got from Tiscali when I signed up) - and have zone alarm firewall and avast anti virus which worked fine with the wanadoo dial up connection I used before.

Just to put you in the picture how frustrating this is I have been disconnected 3 times while typing this message which has taken me about 5 minutes!!!!!!!
If someone can help then PLEASE DO

Hi pacco,

Firstly please accept my apologises that we haven't previous been able to assist you in resolving your disconnection problems.

Could I ask you to try a couple of tests for me, this should allow me to diagnose where the problem may exist.

If possible can you unplug all devices from your phone lines, this includes any filters, phones, sky digi, fax machines, etc.

Then move you computer and modem to the main/master telephone socket in your house, next plug the Sagem modem in, using a normal dial-up modem cable (wiring as follows; wall socket, modem cable, modem, usb port in pc).

Can you now test to see if your disconnections continue?

If they do not, we can now determine that there is no Bt line fault and no modem fault, it would appear the fault is either with one of the filters, or perhaps with an additional socket if one is being used.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Dave
Thanks for that - I'm testing your suggestion out now, so I'll get back to you with the results!

If it is either the BT line or modem where do we go from there?

Cheers

Hi,

If it is the BT Line then Tiscali as you ISP will book the fault to investigate, for this you can either call our support line or PM me your details.

If it's the modem then again call or Pm me and we can dispatch a new one to you.

The first option is to do some line tests in order to establish which is at fault.

Hi Dave

Have sent PM to you with my details - can you set the ball rolling with whatever tests we need to do now.

It isn't as bad running from the main socket, but the problem is still there

Cheers for your help so far

pacco

I'll look into this now for you, first steps will be to Woosh your line to see if there are any obvious faults.

Dave

Just to keep you in the picture I've had a guy from BT Broadband on the phone. He's gonna arrange an engineer to come out and test the line.It disconnected twice while he was on the phone,so he is aware of what is happening.

Thanks for your help so far, and I'll get back to you when i know more.

Cheers

Paul

Great, I am also tracking this with BT.

Dave

Just to let you know that everything (fingers crossed) is ok now with my broadband connection.

Thank you very much for all your help - it is greatly appreciated, and has restored my faith somewhat in Tiscali as a service provider.

Cheers

Pacco

Modem wont keep me connected.

Hi

Just wondered if anyone from Tiscali can help as I have a problem with my connection?

I have to dial up to Tiscali Broadband every single time I fire up. I have also been getting a box that says my internet connection has been broken and could be a problem with the server! Its been fine up to pres and has only just started over the past four days or so. I am also getting a message on dial up that there is no connection to my phone line. I have to keep restarting the PC until this clears itself.

I just get so fed up having to phone Tiscali Help Line all the time and often there is a problem with us understanding each other on the phone, which leads to friction.

Cheers now.
