Tiscali's 1mbps (4kbps) Broadabnd package

Hey i am subscribed to tiscali's 1meg unlimited buissness broadband package but currently i am currently having a 4kbps 'Broadband' for only £19 a month! about 14x slower than dial-up.

ive done regular speed tests for the last week and its been near enough the same result meaning if i wanted to carry on with my regular downloading it would take 23 days non stop downloading to get 1GB :mad:.

my speed test result:
(It took quite a while to upload the picture. Also its not a finished test as for some reson it was taking a while :confused:)

After a few days i emailed ticali asking for help the first email i got from them was to tell me my bill was due then they sent:

Thank you for contacting Tiscali Technical Support.

I gather from your e-mail that you are facing slow speed.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

on checking our records with the phone number <MY NUMBER> which you have provided, I have found out that you have a Tiscali business broadband Account.

Unfortunately, I am unable to assist you at this helpdesk. I request you to contact our Business Broadband Support at 0870 7400 801. Calls are charged at national rate.

So for some stupid reson i had to fone them so i did and after 10 mins they told me i had consumer broadband and told me to ring the cunsumer (10p per min) line so after another long wait they told me i had buisness broadband and had to phone their buisness broadband line :mad:. And when i said i did they said i must of got the number wrong (Im thinking: FFS u idiot it says Welcome to tiscali buisness broadband as soon as u ring the number how could it be the wrong F***ING number). So after that i phoned the Cancellations line and this call center was in the UK for once (Obviously so you can understand them while they tell you not to leave) and they said i cant cancel till March 08 cos of the 12 month contract (They probably didnt include in the contact that they will provide broadband cos otherwise everybody would be able to get a MAC code without paying the remainder of their bills to where their contract ends.

Eventually i get through to some1 who will 'help' who blames it on my computer (That i reinstalled windows on a few hourse before to make sure it wasnt the computer) and tells me im connected at 1.1Mbps (which even plugged into the master phone socket im not).

I suggest anyone who is thining about joining tiscali should rethink unless they are happy to to run up a huge phone bill on listning to tiscali's useless technical support team.

Hi molb and welcome to ISPreview I can see you are in a trap and lets see if we can find some information to help us beat Tiscali (if that is possible).

1st are you on Tiscali LLU?
2nd have you another pc to test the line on leaving your PC off?

Could you give a litle information about your setup, router, cabling phones or anything else that has changed about the time your speed dropped.

Could you get the information from your router the line stats as this helps to build a picture of the problems.

Hey,

Im not on LLU i have tested on a laptop and the connection is still the same. I use a Mercury router(a cheap one off ebay) That always worked before fine and if i use the normal modem that tiscali gave its the same speed. My computer is about 3 Meters away from master phone socket. There was a BT engineer on the phone line outside before the probs started. But i have done lots of tests to make sure the problem isnt me. My broadband max speed is about 1-2Mbps at my house. I am about 3 miles away from my exchangehttp://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=SWCAB

I noticed on the image you have other programs running in the background I personally would close such as skype and windows live as they run in the background. Agreed shouldn't slow you down that much but it does give a slightly slower speed test.

Most of the time i run the test without anything on i get same result :( (i really didnt want to uplaod another screenshot without the programs open it takes a while :P)

I'd be interested to know whether a speed test that excludes your ISP throws up the same result. See No.6 for details of how to perform both types:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/adsltips/02.shtml

Ironically BT guarantees at least 28Kbps on their line for dialup and will definitely consider 4Kbps to be a fault. Also, if you pickup the phone, do you hear any noise on the line? Have you tried connecting with PPPoE (see tip no.1)?

TEST ERROR

Unexpected result received when querying the network to find your services connection details. Please try again shortly, but if this problem persists raise the issue with your service provider.

When i try to do the test with my tiscali username i get above error and when i use the speedtest@speedtest_domain user the router conencts but i cannot load any web pages.
The phone works fine and PPPoE wont work. :(

You'll get that message if your ADSL connection has been LLUed, I guess you might also get it if you have a datastream connection. Although I understand the BT speedtest is very prone to spitting out errors when it is busy anyway.

To check if you are on an LLU connection, bung your phone number in this checker http://www.ukfsn.org/cgi-bin/availability.cgi and it will mention something about LLU and a fee payable if you want to migrate to them. (unless you've been llued very recently as I think the databases can take several days to catch up)

If you have a Tiscali Datastream connection, the following Router login + speedtest should work:-

username: testing@dslconnect.co.uk
password: testing

Tiscrapi Speedtest: http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk

If you do have a fixed rate or ADSL max IPStream connection, then you will be able to run the old BT speedtest using the direct link below while connected with the @speedtest_domain router login.

Username: speedtest@speedtest_domain
Password: anything
Direct link to Old BT Speedtest: http://217.35.209.142:50302/cgi-bin/home.page.pl

If you connect but can't open the speedtest page using the link above, make a note of the IP address and gateway IP address that your router has been assigned and do a whois http://www.serversniff.net/content.php?do=whois . You'll probably find they are not BT IP addresses, which means you are not on IPstream.

ADSL Availability

Our tests indicate that you can order ADSL on your line

If you already have an ADSL service on the line you will need a MAC to move to us

BT have indicated that the maximum speed possible on your line is 1.5Mbps or greater.The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.Thank you for your interest. Do note however that this is indicative only and actual speeds may vary based upon your how well your line performs and conditions at your local exchange.

Order a New ADSL Activation - OR - Migrate from your existing ADSL service.

You already have ADSL on your line. You can migrate to us or another ISP with a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC).
Is what i got from UKFSN.

The testing@dslconnect.co.uk user and http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk worked but my connection speed result stayed the same.

Try the old bt speedtest as well with the speedtest_domain login.

Username: speedtest@speedtest_domain
Password: anything
Direct link to Old BT Speedtest: http://217.35.209.142:50302/cgi-bin/home.page.pl

If you can't connect with the speedtest_domain login or your router gets allocated a non-bt IP address you are definitly not on IPstream. Otherwise if the test works it will connect you direct to BT's test server bypassing tiscali completely.

Also check your router settings
vpi=0
vci=38

protocol= PPPoA
encapsulation= VC-MUX

The only other thing I can suggest as a long shot is it might be worth reducing your MTU to 1430 and rebooting, although I don't think it will make any odds. (set it back to the default if it doesn't help)

I'm sorry that I can't help, only commiserate with you.

I wonder if it is policy to ignore emails and force you to phone them ?

And when you're on the line earning them money, do they deliberately keep you hanging on, earning them money, knowing that emailing them is a waste of time and effort ?

Or is your business important to them, yeh right.
