Toob install advice please

Hi

I am considering switching from Virgin to Toob and was hoping for some advice on installation before I sign up please.

I don't fully understand what parts of the current BT openreach line will be replaced by toob and what options there are for where it comes into the house.

Currently the BT line is fed from a telegraph pole across the road to the top left when facing the front of the house, it then drops down and comes in to the room upstairs on the left under the floorboards and goes into a small junction box to join to a telephone cable (4 pair if I recall) that then runs under the floorboards along the landing and then somehow drops downstairs into the rear of the hallway below where there is a BT openreach socket on the wall.

Will toob need to replace the cable from the telegraph pole and also the cable within the house all the way to the BT socket with their own fibre? Because I really don't want to have to lift all the floorboards up.

If that is the case can I ask them to move the line from the telegraph pole to the other side of the house?

I have done a lovely drawing of the house. Purple line is existing one and green is proposed. Currently the Virgin broadband enters the house at ground level on the right hand side so if they could run it down the side of the house and in next to that it would be much better for me.

If they can't move the fibre from the telegraph pole are they able to go through into the loft area and install the router up there? I have a router up there acting as a wireless AP that is cabled to the virgin router downstairs and so I could basically swap them over, have the toob router in loft and AP in living room?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I'll give some more detail later but they won't touch your existing copper line or socket, they'll instead run a new fibre optic cable to your home from the top of the BT pole. This means they'll follow your proposed Toob green line (in your picture) and through the existing Virgin entry if that's what you request.

It's unlikely they'd be willing to enter your loft. I had Toob installed nearly 2 years ago now and ran some plastic tubing through the loft to where I wanted my ONT to be installed and Toob pulled their fibre through it. I'll get some pics shortly so you can see what I mean

I have a comms cab at the back of the house and like you didn't fancy lifting the floorboards for a fibre route and neither did I want black fibre cabling running down the front of my house. So the installation went with fibre running from the top of the BT pole (1) to the soffit of my house (2). You get to choose where this goes. I installed some tubing (bought from Toolstation) in the loft from the front soffit to the side (3) by the guttering. I dropped some string and lubricant in to the tubing and the Toob engineer taped the fibre cable to the string and pulled it though. I then requested the engineer cable-tie the fibre to the waste pipe and clip it along the brickwork at the side (4).

The engineer then installed an external Toob fibre tray/box which connects to the ONT on the other side of the wall (5). Finally I ran a cat5e cable up to my comms cab.

Thanks a lot bon thats really helpful I am a lot clearer now on what needs to be done.

So basically the engineer pulled it through the tubing without needing to go in your loft at all. Clever!

It's shame they can't enter the loft as I basically would have it go through the soffit in the same way as you have but instead have the ONT & router mounted inside the loft space. I already have cat5e cabled into the loft from the downstairs front room and my study so would just connect that to the router.

But it seems I could go for the option of having it run down the right hand side of my house which isn't too bad but like you not very keen on having cables attached to the front of the house. Also we have the top half of the house with white pebble dash and cable clips don't work very well in it, can end up with chunks blown out.

We have a downpipe on that side from the guttering so I wonder if I could get him to cable tie to it to the back of that like you did?

Can I ask what that white thing is attached to the soffit please?

Thanks again for your help!

Yeah exactly, I knew they wouldn't go in to the loft (and neither would I be too confident with them up there, liability and all..) but I had a route planned in my head and running conduit meant I got the exact route I wanted with the cable hidden. I knew if I hadn't done that but had requested the fibre be installed to the back of the house they'd have gone to the soffit and run the cable down the house and the around side of porch etc which would have bothered me.

It did make me giggle though when the other engineer who was pulling the cable through let out some expletives from getting 'goo' all over his hands 😅

The white bit is just a bit of the conduit poking out with a fitting to keep it in place to the soffit (the kit came with this).

A bit late, but the installation guys went into my loft. I have the installation exactly as OP wanted. I had to pull the fibre from the inside of the soffit to where they could reach, but otherwise the guys did the rest. 'Quickest and easiest installation' they had sone, they said.
(I had boarded the loft, and had lighting)
