I am moving to a council disabled access property shortly and there is a 5G mast 170m away. I have been trying to find out if I would be able to use a 5G sim just inside the front of the flat, by the windows.
I haven't been able to see who operates the mast, plus I really haven't got a clue of what questions to ask a search engine. The postcode I am moving to is NG8 3BJ, on Strelley Rd. the windows face the road and the mast is 170m to the west on the same side of the road. Being housebound at the minute I really have no idea of how to get the information I would need.

Thanks for reading

Just done a little search on bidb.co.uk and 5G shows as full for EE at that postcode, so I would assume it is an EE mast. Being that close, you’d get excellent connectivity, providing the cell isn’t overloaded with connections.

CellMapper is probably the website you need.

All networks have cell sites on or close to that road, so you'll have to go through them all and make sure that the network you choose has transmitters pointing in your direction.

As has been said above me, while 4G is great across all networks, only EE has a very strong 5G signal there. EE Is definitely one of the more expensive networks, and the data won't be truly unlimited. You'll need to check your monthly usage to ensure that this is going to be a viable option for you in case you happen to be a very heavy data user.

My advice would be to try putting your postcode in Three's 5G cover checker map and see what you get back

If if shows good coverage I would get an unlimited social sim tarrif from Smarty for £12 a month.

Then just buy either an unlocked or Three locked 5G router from CEX.

Placed on my windowsill I was getting 150mb/s with Smarty. That is incredible considering with FTTC all I could get was 30mb/s

Good morning all, I was very grateful for all your help earlier. I recently came out of hospital after a reasonably long stay, so I could do with picking the Hive mind. I got advice from you about what equipment would be best for me and as I haven't moved just yet, so if I were to get a 5G router (unlocked) would it run on the 4G signal at my old address for 2 or 3 weeks until I finally move.

Again I thank you for the information, so now to ask the hive what is the best and most reliable unlocked 5g router that would suffice with my move to 170m from a 5G mast, I have good 4G service here, so it is all about my move. I look forward to any suggestions that you can give me.
Cheers

ZyXEL NR5103E Is generally the well respected router that does things well. Get one from places like CeX or cash converters so you have a bit of warranty and protection in case it got blocked in future.

V1 (My recommendation)

V2 (Smaller but a little poorer quality)

Both examples linked above should be unlocked despite the Three branding on them.

Good morning, I have followed the brilliant advice given and bought a ZyXEL NR5103E, I'm afraid I now need to ask about an external antenna. I must apologise for my frequent questions, but Long Covid really is crap for the memory....
Again, thank you Hive....

It doesn’t sound like you’re going to need an external antenna for how close the transmitter is. If you add them in unnecessary situations it can sometimes make matters worse. Give it a try as-is and see what the signal is like before going any further. Be sure to try in different rooms of the house too.

I would agree with @Koda. I have wasted a lot of time with external antennas. One, a cheap one, has given a small improvement but hardly worth the fiddling and drilling.

I've just returned a "Yoiimiya Waterproof 5G LTE Antenna External Omni-directional Antenna" as I wasted a lot of time trying this in various different positions, including high up on a pole. My conclusion was that the 5metres of cable resulted in quite a lot of signal loss despite my Huawei router showing an "Excellent Signal" (see screen grab). My download speed was only 17mb/sec whereas I was getting 60+mb/sec without the external antenna.

PS. I wish I had read Mark Jackson's excellent overview of this subject, before I jumped into this forum. It would have saved me a lot of time, discovering many of the things of which he wrote.
