TP-Link Archer MR400 vs iPhone 13 Pro Max?

I keep reading:
  • WIFI 6 with up to 2976 Mbit/s for up to 16 devices
Is it a actually 64 then?!
Well both the 5G and 4G CPE Pro's 2's are 64 devices Simon, unless you're referring to something else.

The original 5G CPE Pro was 64 devices as well.

Accoring to Huawei, the 5G CPE Pro 2 supports 128 devices Simon.

Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2

I'd better start buying more goodies then to see if they're right.

Where is that from?
Their site says 128 devices.

From these sites:

Got to be an error on both sites Simon, I always have more than 16 devices connected, and as you can see from Huawei's own website, it actually supports 128 devices.

I just incorrectly assumed it was 64 too.

Brilliant! Thanks. Any tips on where to buy one? They don't seem that easy to get hold of.

Huawei CPE Pro 2, Huawei B818, Netgear Nighthawk M1/M2, Huawei B628 (in that order in my opinion). Alternatively tether off a cheapo 5G smartphone (such as second hand Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite), as it can be cheaper, but also more fiddly.
So the Huawei models seem impossible to buy :( Do you know something I don't @Lucian?! The Netgear won't work for me unfortunately as I need two ethernet ports.

The B628 is on Amazon - would you say go for that?

Go for it, if you don't like it, return it.

I'd prefer either of the other two if I'm honest! Are they discontinued? Stuck in China?
If the B628 will match the speed of the Iphone then it should be good enough. The B818 will not help you much more.
By the time 5G reaches you in 1-2 years hopefully there will be many more models available, we need to let the pandemic and the chip shortage pass.

I see it's available discounted on Amazon Prime £158, it's not a bad deal.

Ordered! Thanks everyone for your help today. Will see what it's like when it comes.

I'm currently using an LB2120 in bridge mode on EE.

My local mast has B3 (20Mhz bandwidth) / B20 (5Mhz bandwidth). Would I benefit from upgrading the router? I would need bridge mode or the ability on the new router to establish an L2TP tunnel to AAISP due to CGNAT on EE.

Any recommendations?

Yes, the B628 (mentioned earlier) does support bridge mode as well as L2TP VPNs (though the 2 features are mutually exclusive, ie you cannot have it be a VPN client in bridge mode).
As your local mast is not that powerful, you may not necessarily see speed improvements, but that's to be seen, best way is to try.

Well that's pretty conclusive! TP-Link router was giving me around 70mb - the new Huawei router is now over 100mb!

I'll let it calm down over the next few days but that's a good start :)

Thanks to everyone who offered advice on what to do.

Great forum.

Great news Simon, enjoy your new router and improved speeds.(y)

Hmmm just for others that are watching I'm having all sorts of issues with devices not being able to connect to this router :(

I'm used to routers that just 'work' and rapidly losing patience with this!

Are you using 5GHz wi-fi? If so some older devices might not connect to the higher 5GHz bands. Your router dynamically allocates the channel when switching on so sometimes the channel it selects might be ok, other times not. Check out your devices on the 2.4ghz band first. If they're all ok switch to 5ghz and test again. If some devices refuse to connect then you can manually select a 5GHz channel. I have a media player for instance that is about 4 years old that will only connect to channel 64 and below.

Eccles we solved this in another thread, it was the EE IPv6, ipv4-only APN fixed it.
