TP Link W8961N - Intermittent Connection

Hello,

I keep noticing my connection drops quite frequently. This is the router log for last day or so and I'm unable to figure out if this is a router problem or something to do with my external connection as my ISP say the tests are all passing. Please could someone take a look for me please? I would appreciate the help, cheers.

Firmware Version: 3.0.0 Build 170919 Rel.21648

Tricky as the router you have is an old piece of kit and the older TP-Link devices have a bit of a bad reputation. I've seen errors like that occur on older kit even when the internet link itself was fine, but I've also seen the opposite, so we can't tell much from that alone.

One thing you haven't said is whether or not you've checked the connection via both wired and wifi links during the outages?

Also the details that would be helpful are your DSL connection status ones (e.g. noise margin, attenuation, sync speed etc.).

Is this the white, rounded version, or the black, angular version?

The white version had over-heating issues, whereas the older version worked fine; mine lasted nearly 10 years; first in my house, and then later in my parents house.
With the temps suddenly starting to rise, are the cooling vents blocked with fluff??

Unlike Mark, I found the old kit rock solid, it is the newer kit that has repeatedly failed for me; hence switching to a Fritzbox last week, after a 3rd TPL VDSL router failure in a single year.

I've been more or less having the same problem for around 4-5 days now, I'm calling my ISP later today. Based on my SNR and Attenuation, I'd say my line is fine (we've just installed a new line), It's been really annoying. Sometimes the "DSL/Broadband" light on the router would stay on but the Internet light wouldn't turn on. The only thing that seemed to "fix it" was resetting the router everytime and reconfiguring it; it makes it obnoxious and really useless tbh.
I've had a lot more errors and have been keeping logs for everytime it happened, I'd gladly share some:

How long have you had the new line?

For the first 30 days or so the line will regularly cut out whilst the system tests different line settings to get you the best speeds. You shouldn’t turn off or reset your router during this time because the system will think that the test failed and set you at a lower speed.

Been around 2 weeks give or take. I didn't know that and I definitely reset the router a lot. And I mean A LOT.
Although, How many times do these tests happen a day? because I've been getting more than 10 a day.

Just once a day for a few weeks is typical - what you’re experiencing does sound on the extreme side but if you’ve reset it a lot this would give the system the idea that the line is unstable at its current settings and keep adjusting. If you leave it to do it’s thing for a few days, does it improve? If it does, then it’s likely the initial line testing going on in the background. I think the idea of it is to adjust the line to perform at the highest possible speeds and keep adjusting down until it settles on the speed that’s fast but stable.

What ISP are you using and are you sure the settings are correct in the router?
