Trooli 2Gb worth it?

Hello all,

Trooli have now release a 2Gb symmetrical service at a reasonable £49/month with no price rises like others do.

I am currently on their 900/300 service, we run a load of Wifi6 stuff with the odd networked device here and there (TV, Sky boxes etc that are hard wired.

Is it worth the upgrade?
Anyone else running these speeds?

Hi @niceguy235uk you may find my blog about multi gig Internet of intrest https://fttppro.co.uk/is-multi-gigabit-broadband-worth-it/

With your WiFi6 devices you won’t be able to achieve the full 2Gbps on a single device unless you have WiFi 6E or newer and even then it’s a push.

For hard wired devices they would need to have at least 2.5gbe network cards to achieve the full 2 Gbps speeds.

If your a busy household and are finding your current package is causing bottlenecks then you may benefit from this new package.

If it’s just upload your struggling with Trooli and now doing symmetric across all packages so you should be able to change to a 900/900 package.

This is my dilemma when FTTP finally gets here, part of me wants to order the 1.6/1.8Gbit tier (fastest option on openreach),

But the sensible part of me says nah just order the 1gbit.

For me to go beyond 1gbit I’d have to replace the router (usg ultra), both switches and the sfp modules (I have a os2 fibre link between my switches) so it gets rather expensive even if I just use cheapo switches from china it’s still in the £100’s

Odd things are happening.

Decided to stick with the existing package and i am now having all sorts of problems after two years of almost perfect internet.

Web pages are laggy when loading, spinny wheel loading stuff on my phone & TV etc etc.

Now when i run speed tests, my ping has almost double from 4-7ms. Whilst that would normally not be noticeable, it certainly is now although speeds are 800ish/320 ish

I have rebooted the router to see if i was on a crappy gateway but that makes no difference but what i did notice, is that all the speedtests now default to a serverhouse at twice the distance from me.

I know it shouldn't make any difference but it is problematic but i am wondering if it is a routing problem?

I am going to give them a call today but by all accounts, their CS isnt that great, and thats if you can get hold of anyone.

Edit: another speed test and speeds have dropped and ping has hit 11.

Are you running the speed tests from a hard wired device?
I would also recommend the Speedtest.net desktop app and also nperf desktop app.

For Speedtest.net I would recommend Vodaphone’s, YouFibre and Full Fibre test servers as these give me good results on my 5Gbps connection.

For nperf I recommend setting to a UK based 10Gbps test server.

Latency wise try pinging your internet Gateway first then some different internet services you use.
Running trace routes is also useful for seeing where there may be routing issues.

I had to do similar recently when latency to certain internet services spiked and found the traffic was being routed to USA and then back to UK!

Ok just done a traceroute to the Trooli website on their router and it cam back as failed, so i am assuming this could be the issue?

Edit, just used the Netapp Analyser on my phone and i get this.

If the site is loading OK then it's probably a firewall or the security configuration set in such a way that the traceroute won't complete (blocking the traffic it uses).

8ms is fine, given you say pages are loading slowing I wonder if possibly the DNS server is the issue.

Perhaps try setting your DNS/Nameserver settings to use 8.8.8.8 (Google), 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 9.9.9.9 (Quad 9).

(You may use an alternative if you prefer not to trust these companies with your DNS traffic, but these are fairly major public providers of DNS services)

Thanks,

Funnily enough i did used to use Cloudfare but when the issues started, i dropped back to the ISP supplied ones just in case they wanted to dial in and check.

What i have just spotted (which i dont think is relevant), using Speedtest, it now uses an internal and external IPv4 address, but tests from a year ago, used an IPV6 address.

Honestly, I am on 1G symmetrical and it's fine, but most if not all my devices can't do higher anyway - 1G capble router, switches and AP's. even on 1G symmetrical the other end is usually the bottleneck

depends on if a lot of people max out your 1gb. if no then prob not worth getting but if you do max out the 1gb, 2gb will be much better.

Just out of interest, would anyone know or have any idea of what sort of router they would supply? I can find a few with 2.5Gb WAN ports but not any with 2.5Gb LAN ports?

That's not to do with speed, nor would a latency increase from 4 to 11ms be noticeable in the slightest. In fact you're unlikely to notice "laggy" web pages even if you were to reduce your service to 500M or 300M.

There is some other problem going on. It could possibly be DNS, or it could be packet loss and/or congestion in the Trooli network, or overloading of their CGNAT box (if they use one).

Increasing your package from 1G to 2G wouldn't fix this, but you're right to contact them to try to get them to resolve it.

Thanks.

Interestingly i had a BBQM of my ipv6 connection and the graph was like a patchwork quilt, even after rebooting a couple of times.

So, i disabled it on the router and for many of the bigger sites, they seem to load better.

Now enabled it again and its a nice thin green line at the bottom but still not great.

But, like you say, there is a potential network issue somewhere. The gateway i appear to connect to on the router doesnt change when i reboot, so i think its a phone call to see if they would route me differently (assuming they can/it's a thing).

Hi,

I've been with Trooli for a few years now.

Around 2 weeks ago I received an email saying they needed to perform emergency network maintenance.
Since that date I've also seen a rise in ping, when it was 1ms it is now 5ms (still low). That's using the Ookla speedtest and choosing Trooli's server at Maidstone.

My ping graph did initially show some packet loss following this change but that has all disappeared now and I didn't notice a loss in speed or web pages loading slowly.

With regards to their router on the 2Gbps service they use a Zyxel AX6000.
This has a 2.5Gbps WAN port, with one of the 4 LAN ports supporting 2.5Gbps as well.

Yes we had that email as well as apparently a cable was damaged.

All my Speedtests are at different servers to the Fareham one where i have always tested from but this has disappeared from the list if i "Change Server".

Yeah, the IPV6 BBM is very brightly coloured and last night, whereas the IPV4 has a nice flat green line at the bottom.

We had buffering streaming on the TV which we have never had before.

I have also had a chat with a Trooli guy who was surveying for a neighbour and he kinda made out he has been getting a few calls for faults on their 900/300 service, which isnt technically available anymore, as they have changed all of their tariffs to symmetrical which at a guess would be routed differently due to it being a different method of delivery?

I would expect the asymmetrical and symmetrical will be going via the same routes etc the only difference will be the rate limiting/traffic shaping on the upload.

Signed up for the 2Gb service, it's being fitted next week. Received their AX6000 today in post, it has an SFP port on the back, as well as the 2.5Gb WAN ethernet. Are they using that to directly connect the fibre to the router and dropping the separate ONT box?

They may do for you but I'm still using the WAN port.

There is some work to replace some of the older ONT's for one's that restart correctly after a power cut. Whether they just use the SFP port when here to do that might be an option.
