I have been looking to get a wireless Internet solution to use on our boat which we keep on the West Coast of Scotland which we use as much as we can each summer. A phone signal is rare amongst the islands where we mainly sail because of the low populations and mountains etc but things are changing rapidly as Vodafone have done a deal with the military to provide 4G data. In some ways this will spoil the sense of isolation we have enjoyed for the past 30 years when sometimes we can go for ages without any contact with the outside world.
Somehow I have ended up with two ways of doing it. I will try them both for the next couple of cruises and then probably sell one. I am hoping that the various outside antennas I am taking to try will get a lot better reception than our phones get as otherwise we could just use Internet connection sharing as we do now but is not as much fun as having a 'proper' WiFi network !
Below: Teltonika Cat6 router with RAVPower portable WiFi, 240v & 12v power connectors, GPS module, 2 x SMA Antennas & short Cat6 ethernet cable.
Pros: Highly configurable, Remote Access, Robust, Can connect SSD to become a NAS device to stream media and have auto saving of photos etc, Looks good & is fun to set up and use !
Cons: Expensive solution, Moderate speeds, Steep learning curve to use the RUTX09.
Above: Huawei E5785
Pros: Very fast, cheap & simple to use
Cons: Boring
