UK 2G/3G Shutdown Thread

As far as I'm aware the reason that some sites run at 40mhz is because of limited backhaul rather than location.
even then, Peter C mentioned they are upping all masts to 100MHz. Must have been their lower chunk (they have 100+40MHz of n78). They usually broadcast 100, 100+20 or 100+40 on new sites. My site is broadcasting 100+20.

What app are you using to view the nr bandwidth from your site.

It's alright for some Bubbles.

How far are you from that mast? Should be better speeds than that, hell, even I have better speeds with just Band 3 and 20!
I know clivejo, it's just because it's way oversubscribed I think, it's the only three 4G mast there is in Kilwinning.

According to Google maps it's only 1.5 miles from my house to the mast.

Oversubscribed and poor backhaul. They really need to give your area some love, it's about time.

Yeah it sure is Andy199, a few years ago I used to get 100+ megs 24/7.
Plenty of love for neighbouring towns, but not Kilwinning.

It's 3, they never rush at upgrades no matter how congested things get.
Thanks Zathan, that's cheered me up no end.😁

Anybody aware of a particular Samsung 4G phone that has VoLTE functionality, works on the main providers but does not on a MVNO?

I have been pondering why VoLTE devices are not working on some providers and it will be a shame if these devices are discarded earlier to the skip. 2G and 3G phone usage is a lot less now with most 3G being 4G devices dropping back. Those on THREE can change their provider for 2G (while it lasts) but those that want calls and data it will be a new phone prematurely. If 4G and VoLTE doesn't work on your provider, then move provider to one where it does.

Why Samsung? (Someone like Gavin can put me straight).
For another project I happened to buy a cheap generic 8" tablet (dual SIM CAT7) so decided to test it out for this issue. No problems at all so far regarding 4G calling and will try on more MVNO SIMs if I get the chance.

In my view it demonstrates that the networks aren't simply discriminating between devices, (particularly my scepticism regarding those sold by them), but that even an unknown generic product with VoLTE can connect correctly.

Therefore, this indicates to me that it may simply be something within the IMS interaction and/or the HSS/UDM data held and how that is being updated. I don't know whether MVNOs maintain their own or interface to the carrier. But data interface delays make sense when some MVNOs say it may take time to become effective or its omission may be down to data errors.

All good news of course if it is just data as MVNOs hopefully can revert to an allow all VoLTE policy or address it as we move forward to the same type of issues with VoNR.

The reason I am seeking a non-working VoLTE Samsung is I think I have found a way to dump the IMS log and possibly support my theory.

Tesco and giffgaff are held back by O2..... apparently they have ancient systems and refuse to upgrade them

Tesco and giffgaff are held back by O2
I have come to the conclusion that O2 purposely exclude 4G Calling for commercial reasons not technical constraints and it is not the old CSC code (O2 firmware nonsense). O2 choose not to provide it on PAYG, Rollover and other certain plans.

Sky offer 4G Calling and WIFI Calling, and they use O2. So, any excuses by Giffgaff and Tesco appear hollow after all this time.
The Sky stated compatibility is clearly restricted to the main players but probably a useful guide to O2 on the plans that can use it. Sky do not exclude phones sourced from elsewhere. https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-mobile-device-capability

Looking at the plans and comparing Sky with O2 I fail to see any reason why anyone would contract with O2 if WIFI Calling or 4G Calling were required. i.e if you get a O2 varied signal at home/office or live in very rural it has to be better to get Sky rather than direct with uncertainty on O2. Same applies to Giffgaff, Tesco and Lycamobile and of course those being transferred to O2 under duress by VM.

Edit:
Sky SIM. Confirmed worked on generic Tablet for WIFI Calling and VoLTE on Android 11 so there appears to be no discrimination against devices on Sky O2.

Asda SIM. Confirmed worked on generic Tablet for WIFI Calling and VoLTE on Android 11 so there appears to be no discrimination against devices on ASDA Vodaphone.

@Meatball,
Sky use their own billing system.
Giffgaff, Tesco, Lyce and O2 PAYG all use O2's PAYG billing system.
Truphone and Extreme Connect also use their own billing system, and as they are esims, I'd expect full volte and vowifi compatibility from them.
