Un-installing XP

Hi, As the title suggests really. I have a friend who wants to wipe XP off her pc..to basically format it and put Win98 on. After various Google searches i can find nothing of relevance. the only common trail on the subject seems to be, if XP was put on to upgrade then a previous system back-up would have been made so 'add/remove programs' could be used...As it wasn't an upgrade (though it origionally had '98 installed..a uber virus and a format later XP went on) there's no XP in the 'add/remove programs' window, so can't be done that way.
There must be a way to get shot of it..if someone can enlighten me, please?

yea as butler said u need to format the hard-drive. back up all the data you want and download all the drives as win98 not good in finding it's own drivers as XP

Wow!

Hey Andy, thanks for that. Right;

If your friend has the original win 98 disk (and is going to format)then there is no problem ! All you need to do if you have not got the original boot floopy is head over to bootdisk.com and download teh relevant bootdisk...the instructions are on the site, then make sure she has saved all of the info and files she needs saved ont0 cd or other media. In the bios make sure it is set to boot from floppy first then put floppy in the drive and restart and follow the installation process (which will incllude a format that will get rid of all traces of xp)!

This is what i believe she is doing, but it doesn't seem to wanna play. I shall download said item so she can try that too. She's much better at this side of compootas than I am, so i shall relay all of this and see if she understands the deal. Then follow this thread up accordingly.

Handy to know too..i shall look into that, Thanks.

Unicast All good advice so far, but this is a backward step in my opinion.

Right, i never put why..oops. Reason is...her pc is in need of a zimmer frame. It always ran on 98...an XP disc was aquired obviously a step up...but the pc cannot run it...constantly freezing up etc. She is lookin to buy a new pc..but has yet to make up her mind, even as basically as desktop or laptop..so wants to revert to 98 so at least its usable once again.

If its not too much trouble while i have ths thread...

She also has 2 other pc's (donated..in need of repair but to try and tide her over) that have troubles..

1st one..when the power goes on just beeps..constantly. Hard to describe a beep though.
2nd..(though last night it wouldn't fire the monitor) she told me the night before..it came up with an error message 'ultra 666 bios error'. Now i have looked up the meaning..but nothing really suggested as to what or how to fix it.
Both of theses pc's are actually much better than her troublesome number..if only we knew how to get over said issues.

Though no worries if not.

Lastly..
ps I like the way nigel worthington got Naarwich out of the bottom three !!!!
I think I'm one of the only few who dunt follow footy..sorry pal! :o

Thanks very much for you inputs so far guys. :)
As Arnie once said whilst learning to play the piano.. "I'll be Bach". (Sorry..that was bad!!)

A word of warning I believe Microsoft is stopping support for Windows 98 in the very near future in tertms of updates and such like, if your friend wants to use windows 98, I would recommend using a dual boot system but I don't really recommend going back especially if Microsoft and software companies are going to start stopping covering this operating system in the near future.

If the computer's only going to be used for web, e-mail and creating documents, I'd recommend sticking a copy of Linux on there. Buy or download a copy of Mandriva or SUSE, chose KDE for the GUI, install OpenOffice.org (set the default save format to .doc), Mozilla and Evolution and the computer can be used in exactly the same way as it was used when it had Windows on it, while being more secure (even without patching). The only problems might come from connecting through AOL (no Linux client) or if the computer uses a PCI modem (or some specialised hardware), as some of these won't run under Linux.

Jd, Yeah i know about the support issues with 98..though i do not know how long the decision will take..hopefully that wont make much odds.

Unicast...is it a portent that the Dell website is down?? Only kiddin, when they get over their maintenence i shall definately look..thank you. I dunt mean to swear but i also noticed PCWorld (PC Hell as a pal informed me recently!) sell recons etc. Like i say, she's still to make a decision.

Finally, Madman. Not sure as to her intended usage..obviously 98 canee do half what XP can..but yeah, i think the idea is to just give her basics to keep her going. Though most of what you suggested went wooosh over my head, i shall relay your info. Though i think key to her plan is..she already has the 98 disc...it's just turfing XP off and gettin it back on thats the problem.

Muchas Gracias.

It'll make sense if you read it while going through the installer for one of the Linux distros I mentioned.

If she can afford 50 quid then head to a PC fair, i recently got my sister a 1gig PIII base unit for £45; onboard sound, graphics,56k modem,LAN, 256meg of ram and a 10gig HD packed with Windows 2000, Office 2000 and 8 gig of students personal data and documents (arent they supposed to wipe these things before selling them off???)

Bloody Dell website!

Right

1. Go to www.dell.co.uk - select Home - Shop by E-Value Code (top right)
2. Enter 101-D09511a as your E-Value Code.
3. Put the warranty down to one year collect and return
4. Update price

Should be £269 delivered!

Phew!

 By Jove..i think you cracked it!! I'll pass it on, thank ya. Her Father just bought a Dell i believe! More than £3.64 though!! Hee

C_C Maybe if it comes to it?! I think she just doesn't wanna spend any cash on it, as it's spendin what can be put towards a new pc, ya know.

I am passing on all your advice though..thank you all for your time..espacially Unicast for workin your way through the cock-up..

I made my sister buy it after her constant moaning about her old one playing up, I also made her give me her old one which I took home, refitted the graphics card and cpu fan which were loose, and gave to the children at our Nursary to replace the old P200 they had. :D
If there's anyone in the Malvern area with a spare monitor they can donate then I can take the P200 to the kindergarten as they dont have one at the moment.

C-C....Man its a small world sometimes. One of my relations used to live there, and worked in the Westons Cider Brewery!! (though not in Malvern!) Mmmmmm.....Cider!! lol :)

I once did the servicing on the Severn Trent sewage pumping station just downstream from Westons; never seen or smelled such lovely effluent before or since; it looked and smeeled like sweet cider.
