uninspiring pings

Hi,

I have just signed up for lobsterpot expecting to get blistering pings for CS yet i nearly always are presented with ones bigger than Freeserve's and BTOpenworld's.

Jolt servers seem to be the best but this trend still happens, hanging around the 190-220 mark whilst most FS or BT are 190-200.

I havent used this for more than a couple of days so it might be biased. Any ideas?

Hullo.

Lobsterpot has been a little slower the last few days. Probably from people transferring from Barrysworld servers to Jolt/Nildram.

I cant comment regarding CS but this has been apparent while playing Quake III. I can currently connect to an empty server and get a 134-156 stable ping; rising to 200 or so as you'd expect with a few lpbs joining.

Give it a few days. Try connecting at different times to see when it is busy.

Then post a traceroute - and see if their is a nasty router troubling your connection.

Thanks for the info, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

On CS Jolt servers I get a minimum of 160 ping.
I wish i had the 134-156 ping you mentioned, but I will give it time.

Also, could you explain how to do a traceroute? Thanks,

Harry

How to do a Traceroute [Tracert]

Open up a command prompt: (Start/Program/Accessories for WinXP)

Type "Tracert -d mylobsternet.co.uk" to see number of hops and time in milliseconds to your ISP.

Alternatively "Tracert -d [server ip_address]"
e.g. "Tracert -d 194.164.216.142" to a game server to test the route to a place you regularly play.

If a particular router, day in day out is causing problems, there is no harm in contacting your ISP and passing on the details.

Hope that helps.

Is that a Supra Express PRO modem?

My modem is...

a Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro (SUP2311)

It's a little long in the tooth now. I'm sure their is a later model; something better available these days. Plus it doesn't have XP driver support. It *works* but using a default XP driver.

Shame really....

Due to the increasing demand for ADSL and broadband causing a decrease in market share, UKStamp has decided to discontinue the freefone internet dial up service as of 17th February 2003. Therefore, we are not accepting any more applications.
We have decided to progress the company by expanding our server hosting facilities, with ADSL planned to follow in March 2003.

Im now fed up with fast24, currently my ping is around 25-28 on 64k ISDN with them, but they are discontinuing the number from end of this month and the new number sucks badly :(

Anyone recomend a decent pinging ISP? no matter the cost really...
