University Choices

Anyone studied Computer science (or any degree whatsoever) at any of the following unis?

UCL
Kings College London
Leeds
Surrey
Sussex
Essex

I know the chances of anyone here having been to them is small, but i'd just like a bit of feedback as to what the above universities are like and how their employment opportunities have been especially for those who did computer science (or any computing related course). I simply dont have time to go to all their open days, especially when most of them are so far away so a bit of feedback, no matter how little, will help.

if you havnt been to any of the above unis then what are the employment opportunities for computer science in general? Because i happen to know a few poeple who have studied computer science and are struggling to find a job. And yet the media is constantly saying that there's a skills shortage etc...

btw I'd like to go into software development. Second: mybe in some IT department for some company in networking etc

nb whoops put it in the wrong thread. Could the Mod move it please thanks

Skills shortage = no experience != no qualification

I'd rather take someone with 2 years real experience on over someone who fresh from Uni as the first part of the training process is to get them to forget everything they've learnt.

Its the same reason that MCxx/CCxx qualifications look pretty and will get you high paid jobs in corporate enviroments but amount to nothing on the ground.

Best thing you could do is find a course that you are going to enjoy and then find a part time job in the industry you want to get into (so location of uni is best to be near somewhere you'd like to work). From there you can get a feel for what skills you will need to hone up on to get the job you want (and not the skills the careers service *think* you need)

Hope that helps (anyone looking near Telford - http://www.entagroup.com/vacancies.php)

I dont have a degree or any formal quals just GCSE's and Inet+ that work put me through, I work in the IT industry, I work along side lots of people with degrees (Im one of the only people without one) I do some of their training and also advise them when needed.

I would rather go for something like LPI, CCNA and MCSE maybe a few programing courses aswell as they would stand you a lot better for getting a job and wouldnt take 4 yrs to do.

The computing industry is one that can have people with degrees and people without degrees, working side by side.....

I did my degree many years ago and it's my understanding that degrees are not as good these days, however, I always felt better prepared than those without a degree, specially in areas such as analysis / design techniques and methods, etc. Anyone with a logic mind can learn a computer language or networking techniques etc, however, a degree gives you a better understanding of why things are the way they are.... I am pretty sure that a person without a degree would not have a clue about Formal Methods based on mathematics as an exact science to prove the correctness of a program written in a computer language also based on mathematics. Of course, not many people need to do this but if I was developing a software system to control a nuclear weapon for example, I would most definitely want people with degrees.

Real experience is the ideal complement and gives the person those things you cannot find in a book or in the classroom, which must also be true for other fields, such as medicine for example.

I have worked with many people that don't have a degree and are very good at their job - but always comes a time when they don't know something or ever heard about something and you know or at least read something about at uni :D

At the end of the day, the person counts more than anything really... I would happily recruit a clever lad with a talent for computing and no real experience over somebody with plenty of experience but not so much talent

Spy_sat5 just be aware that the industry in full of people with no degrees and some of them will recent you for having one so make sure that you are good at your job before you tell them you have a degree ;)
