Thought my sig would have told you the browser. :)

Something similar in Firefox, at least on the Mac for me anyway, though only the last digit is half shown - looking above, the last is totally gone and the 2nd from last is half there

Ah yes I have the same thing under IE, it's just to do with the vB developers and their bad use of CSS on sites with a fixed width. Some other issues like that around, just small styling issues but not something that really needs urgent attention :).

On a related note, since installing the new anti-spam system we've managed to stop 27 spammer accounts from registering over a period of just 3 days! I checked each account to make sure they were correctly prevented and not real UK surfers and indeed all were highly dubious and most were prevented based on their email being in a database of known spammers.

Many of those spammers wouldn't have gotten through the signup process anyway but it's nice to know that the new spam firewall is working. It checks against a forum reported database of known spammer emails, usernames and IP's. I might disable the IP method as it sounds like the least viable, possibly usernames too; most of those we catch are on their email address. However so far there have been no false positives.

talking about widths, lve always used percentages purely based on the fact that using them seems better than fixed width which often causes issues such as the above :|

I prefer percentages and most of ISPr's internal content is designed with them so that we could adopt that in the future, but you can run into content layout problems when people use resolutions that are radically different from the norm. A fixed "holding" width has the advantage of allowing you to better focus on your layout and structure.

There are ways around this of course. We could use JavaScript to adjust content to dynamically suit different resolutions, but that does get rather complicated.

l wont argue with that one lol.

I have to move every page over to the left 1/2in as I have a black band on left of screen and right hand is off screen it is set to 100% - the old set-up used to sit square on screen - didnt have to move over - I would have to set this Forum to 80% to get whole page on and wouldnt be able to read it. I am now on BB since last week but this was happening as soon as the new layout started. As far as I know nothing has changed on my PC

It's difficult to visualise what you mean without a screenshot, can you email me one?

Hi

Happy to oblige - can you tell me how - I am tech minus - other Forums I go on dont settle like this new system - the old one sat correctly - the bar at bottom of screen goes completely to other side as I type so I cant see end of line until I type there
Even if I hold control and move mouse wheel to reduce zoom level to 90% it is still off centre

Thanks for your reply

Usually just pressing the 'Print Screen' (Print Scrn) key on your keyboard while viewing the affected page is enough. Then you can just paste it into Windows Paint and save the image file somewhere. After that you can upload it to a service like http://www.flickr.com and then use the 'Insert Image' icon when making a new post on our forum to add the Flickr link.

We do have an attachments system on the forum but I don't think it's fully enabled for members. Or you could email me the image but send it to our ISP Submission address and not the others: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/contact.shtml

Thanks for your promt reply - I will take a good look at your instructions - I still havent found everything on my recent XP but will keep exploring and sometime soon you will get an image - meanwhile I will put up with it - not too much hassle

Thanks

What web browser and version are you using?

I am using IE7 - dont know what version - but the Old Forum used to sit centre at 100% - I have just tried reducing to 90 then 80% - still with 1/2 in black band on left of screen - I will try to do a screen grab and see if I can get it to you -
Thanks for your efforts

Hmm the forum should still work with IE7 but I wasn't able to test that far back, we only tested with IE8 and of course the latest IE9. I used a third party Ie7 test site to try it and the forum still worked, although admittedly IE7 doesn't support some of the modern CSS used by the forum.

I don't have IE7 (or any other modern version of IE), but I do have IE6 on an old Windows box, normally used just for my old A3 scanner, so I fired that up, and it works OK with that.

Could it be a screen resolution problem? I bought a "new" (£40 in the local secondhand computer shop) bigger monitor a few months ago, so I hadn't noticed this, but I do recall that in the old forum there was a way of selecting a different display style for old displays using 800x600, which I used to use - maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see that now.

Hi Gorden
yes my old PC was set to 800x600 and all setting were duplicated in this one - my screen is only 10 1/2 x 8 in and PC chappie said I should get bigger screen but money wont allow at present. Do I look in Control Display to check Resolution just in case while exploring XP new toy I might have moved something by mistake. The old style Forum page used to sit central it is just the new one that is off

Thanks

Just to mention Firefox mobile on Android. Forum looks excellent on this browser. Everything shows properly. Actually looks a bit better than on firefox 4 for the pc.

Under XP you will find a 'Display' icon in your control panel and one of the tabs under that should show your currently selected screen resolution / refresh rate and any other options you have. If you're running an LCD (flat panel) display then I highly doubt that 800*600 is the lowest setting and you may be able to go higher, although this usually requires some XP text size or DPI increases to aid readability.

If you're on a CRT then.. well I can't remember the last time I used one of those but I do recall glowing green with radiation afterwards hehehe. ISPreview moved over to support a standard width of 1000 pixels (i.e. to support 1024 resolutions) at the end of 2007. We did have an 800*600 friendly style change in the old vB3 forum but the new one makes the same adjustment more tedious to achieve, I'll see what can be done.. assuming that's the problem.

These days most fixed-width websites cater for resolutions of no less than 1024.

Hi Mark
I have checked res. and it is 800x600 the screen I using is same one was on old PC - Samsung SyncMaster 320TFT beige frame about 2 inches thick -actual screen part is only 10 1/2 x 8 in with speakers in the base ( not using them ) using couple giant eggs left over from when old PC flew the coop !!!! I will look at getting bigger screen - my classic car is next on agenda - so screen will have to wait for while. Thanks anyway for your help.
I will look again at screen grab instructions and see what happens

I'll see if there's something we can do about supporting 800*600 on the forum..
