upgrade

a 2nd hand 15" lcd screen costs about £10-20 at a computer fair, and a 17" costs about £30-40.

kinda surprised ppl actually still use that resolution these days.

There isnt a local Computer Fair now that the local Collage that used to Host them every couple of months went all snooty and now calls itself Acadamy ! I will ask my PC chappie (supplied this PC ) if he has one suitable for Tenner - someone might have traded 15 in for upgrade -got corner PC desk and 15 is as big as I can go - if he hasnt at present will ask him to keep lookout

Well, I suppose there's a certain amount of "What you've never had, you don't miss" in it, but I was actually quite content with the old monitor, which was set to 800x600 - I only relegated it to "spare" because it started playing up a little, going blank about every third day, needing ten minutes or so switched off before it would come back to life.
So, I took a wander along the High Road, where we are fortunate in having two little independent computer repair type places that sell secondhand stuff, plus one of those "Cash Converter" stores that is also worth a look on the offchance. As per Captain Cretin's post, secondhand monitors are fairly cheap - I was surprised *how* cheap! Having no idea of current prices, I had budgeted for up to £50, and was thinking 15 inch, but on seeing what was on offer, decided to get a 17 inch instead - in very decent nick, and only £40, so I'm now on 1280x1024.
Without having to make my brain work too hard though, I can think of three friends who still use 800x600 and, as I did, take the attitude of "If it's still working perfectly well, why spend money replacing it?"

I upgraded from 800*600 years ago when websites and software started being developed for higher resolutions. After awhile you get tired of having to scroll left and right all the time just to see the content :) .

Hi Mark
I have just changed to 1024 - right side now on screen but there was still 1/2 in. black band LH side -font too small so had to Ctrl and mouse wheel one click bigger. Now while typing reply black LH band is back

Will go and look at other Forums I visit to see what effect change on their view - also post looks like bad typewriter ribbon - grotty !!!
Perhaps this screen cant handle it

Think I know what you mean now silv.surfer, or at least I've been able to spot a problem where the left hand side of the forum leaves a 50 to 80 pixel gap that shouldn't be there. I didn't notice it until I did some re-sizing experiments and I'm not entirely sure where it's coming from. Will need to experiment some more to pin the bug down.

Thanks for coming back Mark

I dont understand how I seem to be only one having this problem - others must have XPSP3, IE7. 800x600,Win. and other Progs 2000-
That is why I think it might it might be down to my tiddly screen. - The other Forums I visit - Computer active, sayno, Rover Club etc all sit without band and equal sides - if this will be of help to you. or if there is any of MY settings to look at - to check if coming from my Outfit - let me know and where to look.

Dont worry about tweaking the site to fit I am perfectly happy for it to stay as is - small price to pay for all the help and advice I have had. Will be posting ISP review very shortly - I am over the moon with the ISP I eventually chose - Not one of the Big Boy Bandits.

Well the site is designed to work at 1024 width resolutions and a lot of Netbooks use that scale so I do still need to track the bug down. Presently I haven't the faintest clue, though it's definitely a CSS issue.

Ok Silv.surfer, try it now. I discovered that, for reasons unknown, the left and right margin settings were protruding outside of the forums style and adding a 70 pixel wide off-set in size on the left side. I set these to 0 and that appears to have fixed the bug, at least it has for me, can you check?

You might need to reload / refresh the page to see the change.

looks better to me, truth be told before your last edit l had a minor bit of scrolling to do across.. l thought it was down to the fact that l have a larger monitor and that because l sit back from it and zoom the text on firefox to make it easier to see.. that it was just something that didnt really bother me.. but now the forum looks pretty much as it should with no need to scroll across (just up and down as it should be)

Hi Mark
Yes better - only felt marker width band now - the reply on Right side is against vertical scroll bar so I guess it is because I have gone back to 800x600 - I tried 1024 and found I couldnt read comfortably for much time - one way to get Electric bill down. I guess I will have to get bit bigger screen soon.

Reload - did you mean go back to Google and start again - I have refreshed and have the result above.

Thanks for your efforts - leave it as is now - can live with it untill I can afford to get it sorted my end.

I just said reload because some browsers like Firefox say "reload" instead of "refresh" for when you essentially want to check if the content on a page has changed or if a page fails to load properly the first time (the icon usually looks like a semi-circular line with an arrow at the end). This also happens when you restart your web browser. Anyway you can see the changes so no problems with that.

What was it that caused you problems with reading at 1024? I'm guessing the text was too small and or sharp? If that's the case then we can tell you haw to make it bigger and clearer for higher resolutions. Sometimes reducing the brightness and or gamma on your monitor can also aid readability as most LCD's ship with the Brightness set way too high. Otherwise it's probably just that your Samsung SyncMaster 320TFT is pretty ancient :) .

Hi Mark
If you think the Samsung is ancient you should have seen the one I changed - it had a backside like an elephant but still worked - was moved to garage in case of emergency - on 1024 the text is very small and if I change the zoom I am back to square one again -
This screen is darker than previous oldie - how do I lighten just a tiny bit - photos that I know were lighter on other oldie look a bit too dark - although they print of correctly so I dont know whether to lighten before printing or print fingers crossed
Can I lighten through PC - I am worried about using controls on the screen in case it goes up the shute
The controls on screen front are - a four point star North and South look like scroll and West is minus and East is + and button on left of star marked Exit and one on Right marked Menu I havent touched any so far dont know what they do.

It depends upon whether or not the graphics card / chip inside your computer offers you a good user interface or not. Most of the settings for text size, DPI (scaling to make everything bigger or smaller - not just text, but can cause some content to look a little odd), brightness and gamma (similar to brightness) can on Windows XP be found under the 'Display' (monitor) icon in Control Panel.

should be able to access the same setting via properties if you right click on desktop as well.

Thanks Mark and Timeless
I will try your advice shortly about 1024 alterations - I have made notes of your instructions - I have told yahoo webmail I want to stay on Classic and 800x600 until I can tryout your advice - Now they have said Alert your Browser (IE7 ) is out of date and to download their IE8 but have found that lots of people have had problems with Yahoo version - the advice out there is to go to Microsoft and get the Microsoft version - but on the whole IE8 seems to still have some problems in general - so will stop with 7 until looked at further. I know it is wimpy but I would rather be safe than sorry !!!

personally lve not had problems with IE 8 but then lm on Win7, the only problems lve heard allot about are IE9 however as far as lm aware you cant install that on anything lower than Vista, basically it uses new technology called "hardware acceleration" which simply put uses the graphics card to give a faster browsing experience..

Hi Timless
I have heard of people having problems with XP SP3 and IE8 - saw a special warning in posts on yahoo site about not to load yahoo version (cheaper than chips ) if you want to Load IE8 to go to Microsoft - people have had to uninstall yahoo's one after problems - droping of or out and they had to get Microsoft to get a good result.

I will have a word with my Computer chappie - He will have to pay visit because this PC he built is having problems with Combined CD/RW drive - its being picky about which Photo CD 's it will read even some it will open one day and not next - I think it is dodgy and I would prefer seperate Read and Burn Trays - so if one goes wrong only one to change . I am worried that it may burn on the disc I want to copy and lose photos.
