upgrade

when SP3 came out l do admit l steered clear and wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, however l generally dislike installing service packs in their initial releases for a good six months so the bugs are worked out. furthermore l NEVER install a service pack unless my computer has recently been reinstalled, l tend to build and install my own systems and have found that there are more problems on a system when concerning service packs if the operating system has been installed for a while.

as for your CD problem, my best suggestion is a CD/DVD cleaner, sounds like a possible dust buildup, by the sounds of it you dont exactly do any PC cleaning and leave it to the professionals who know what they are doing which is good but after a good few months you will be surprised at the wads of dust that your computer sucks up... (no word of a lie lve seen computers with enough wads of dust and hair in to wonder if it swallowed a small dog or a cat!!)

"...after a good few months you will be surprised at the wads of dust that your computer sucks up..."

Reminds me of the time I first attacked a friend's antique PC to do a bit of upgrading for her in preparation for switching from dial-up to broadband.
She's a real busy one with the housework - everything gets done regularly, the place is spotless - but not inside the PC, of course, it hadn't been opened since she bought it about seven years previously.
Living not far from Heathrow Airport, and fairly close to the Great West Road - can you imagine the amount of dust?

"Right, those memory sticks are nicely clipped in, they won't get sucked up by accident - stuff the fancy ideas like cans of compressed air, just gimme the Hoover!"
:D

compressed air is pretty useful for heatsinks tho l find :D

Hi Timeless and Gordon
I suspect that the Tower I got from him was one that had been tidied-up and the CD-RW was still in situ from previous owner because he said that the one he had intended for me ready loaded with XP and bigger Hard Drive was at back so as running late to come to me and grabbed a better one from the front but still only charged £160 as agreed - ( I went from Win 98SE and 4G hard drive to 10G partitioned and XPSP3 ) everything from old Unit is behind partition. I have only had this Tower since Nov 2010 so it is possible it got missed getting a D: drive clean - I will see what he says and if cheap enough get him to fit NEW seperate CD and Burn drives
I havent used the Burn driver at all yet - might it help if I copied some Pics to try it out - The Win 98 used to quit after 2 1/2 mins so I never finished a burn. Still been finding lots of new things on XP so havent had time to have a go yet. :o

PS I can see the Dartford Bridge and Tunnel from Front but PC is at back so not much dust - and I know more about Classic Cars than PC workings hence very cautious :D
I think I might be in line for another slapped wrist for off topic ! Sorry but no one near to help other than Profesional and that costs
Ann

seems a bit much for £160, tho you only said it had a 10GB drive, without knowing the full spec tho l couldnt comment properly..

Getting a bit off-topic but.. :) .

Reminds me that my PC needs cleaning too. I usually take the CPU heatsink out, gently hoover inside the case and then detatch the heatsink from its fan to give it a proper clean. Certainly does get dusty in there and getting rid of that makes for a more stable PC in the summer :) . Just have to remember that PC dust is way more toxic than normal household muck.

I used to use compressed air but it meant cleaning the thing with a mask on lol .
