URGENT help needed - everyone plz

Hello everyone,

a newbie from Kolkata INDIA needs some help...

Well I have been on cable internet for last 1 year which is on 64kbps...

Now I have been thinking of upgrading it to 256kbps or 512kbps....(the fact that we can upgrade to 256kbps or 512kbps...i came to know a few days back only; infact what is kbps and what does 64;256 or 512kbps imply; i came to know a few days back only)

Now I am really confused as to certain following questions as when things comes to technical side of computer and on top of it networking..I am at a total loss...

Before putting forward my questions, i would like to give the link to the plan which i am considering to take:

http://www.tataindicombroadband.com/access/postpaid/order/tariff-post-india.html

Please see the link above (its just one small page) and be kind enough to answer my following questions...............

1. I can take either USB Modem connections OR Router connections. Now Modem costs me rs2000 and router costs rs3000.

Now i know that modem is something which we need to connect to internet. But why it costs rs 2000 and what is router and why it is costly?

Do i get any advantage if i take router over modem (i presume we do most probably thats why router is costing more)?

But what is the definite advantage?

Finally which one should I take and why?

Will it still be usable after i leave this companys connection?

2. In the bottom of the page u can see that

"Note: 1 Free Static IP for all router connections. " is available...

Now I dont understand what is static IP address and does it have any advantage....

3. Plus I want to use this connection broadband from home PC. But say if i am in different city can i take advantage of this broadband internet in another city on another PC possibly by entering my login and password? (sorry if this q was too stupid)

4. Any other suggestions, comments, opinions....also does know of any other service which one can take from Kolkata, India apart from i mentioned...

I tried to understand what is router, static ip address on google but its too tough for a newbie like me....

I want to use home PC for online share trading which requires live real time streaming quotes from stock excahnges and instant execution of order...hence the need to upgrade...i dont want to host web server; email server (i hope the last few words were not meaningless...)

Plz clarify in as much detail as possible with ur recommendation........

and yes please explain to me in simpler terms (i am incapable of understanding too much technical computer terms; i am a purely finance guy: just i am to use computer to do work for online stock trading)

Thank you very very much for taking your time to read and reply,

With best regards,

Sunando

Now i know that modem is something which we need to connect to internet. But why it costs rs 2000 and what is router and why it is costly?

The router you are talking about is probably a router and a modem in one, hence the cost. A router can send the internet signal to several computers in your network of computers, ie. your main PC a laptop, etc. A router also adds a degree of security that is worth considering. Some routers have also a firewall built in for even more security.

Do i get any advantage if i take router over modem (i presume we do most probably thats why router is costing more)?

See my answer above

But what is the definite advantage?

Finally which one should I take and why?

I used to have a modem and now have a wireless router. I prefer a wireless router simply because I can connect to the Internet with my Laptop from anywhere in the house. If it was a wired router I'm not too sure I prefer a router over a modem. The choice is very much dependant on your needs.

The definite advantage is that for a business with potential to grow and use a network of computers, the router would come very handy. The extra security is also a definite advantage.

Will it still be usable after i leave this companys connection?

You should be able to use it with another internet provider, however, there are limitations and you would need to ask the new internet provider about using that particular modem or router.

2. In the bottom of the page u can see that

"Note: 1 Free Static IP for all router connections. " is available...

Now I dont understand what is static IP address and does it have any advantage....

An IP address is what identify a computer in the internet. There is more to it but that is all you need to know. With a static IP you always have the same IP - good for playing games and other things. With a dinamic IP, your internet provider assigns an IP everytime you connect to the internet. Security might be better but just a little. A moving target for hackers!

3. Plus I want to use this connection broadband from home PC. But say if i am in different city can i take advantage of this broadband internet in another city on another PC possibly by entering my login and password? (sorry if this q was too stupid)

NO, Broadband and your telephone line or cable go together.

4. Any other suggestions, comments, opinions....also does know of any other service which one can take from Kolkata, India apart from i mentioned...

Before you go ahead, tyry using broadband. The numbers 64,256.512 don't tell you the whole story.

I noticed that different packages are ofered. If you don't get the right package for your needs, it might prove to be very expensive. If you download more than you are allowed you will have to pay extra. This is something that is difficult to work out and you will only have to make the best guess to begin with. Later on, you will find out how much data you are downloading in a month.

I tried to understand what is router, static ip address on google but its too tough for a newbie like me....

Hi salvador,

thanks a lot buddy....plz be kind enough to also clarify the following:

"NO, Broadband and your telephone line or cable go together."

this means that we r limited...???????

Is there any option in which we r not limited...any alternative?????????????

"I prefer a wireless router simply because I can connect to the Internet with my Laptop from anywhere in the house."

but that is restricted to your house right even if u have wireless router. this means u cannot have access to broadband internet in a different place say a different city with ur laptop. Right???????????

"This is something that is difficult to work out and you will only have to make the best guess to begin with. Later on, you will find out how much data you are downloading in a month."

Is there any website or resource where we can have a way to calculate or estimate the idea regarding it...some measurement tool???

Thank you very much for replying to each point individually....really cant thank u enough man...

With best regards,

Sunando :p

"NO, Broadband and your telephone line or cable go together."

What that means is that your broadband is delivered through your telephone line or cable, so you cannot use somebody else's line to get your own broadband service.

There isn't an alternative for broadband at the moment!

"I prefer a wireless router simply because I can connect to the Internet with my Laptop from anywhere in the house."

The access is limited to around 400 feet of open space. That doesn't include walls or floors etc. It's fantastic for a home internet / network or even an office

"This is something that is difficult to work out and you will only have to make the best guess to begin with. Later on, you will find out how much data you are downloading in a month."

What I meant by that, is that it's a little difficult to estimate, for the first time, how much data you will download in a month. Everything counts, emails - webpages - etc, towards your free usage. So if you go for the package that allows you 500 MB of free usage and you use more than 500 MB, you then have to pay for extra. Within a couple of months of using your BB you will have a much better idea of your need for "Internet usage"

Is there any website or resource where we can have a way to calculate or estimate the idea regarding it...some measurement tool???
As a matter of fact, some ISPs do provide some guidelines, ie download 30 songs + 100 emails + 900 minutes of web browsing for an XX MB a month. My BB connection is unlimited so I download as much as I want - never have to think about how much I'm using :-)

Thank you very much for replying to each point individually....really cant thank u enough man...

My pleasure.

"What that means is that your broadband is delivered through your telephone line or cable, so you cannot use somebody else's line to get your own broadband service."

I am extremely sorry to repeat a question (i know it will be definitely a repitition...but i am also very hopeful that u wont be angry...and kind enough to reply as u did in previous two posts).

This essentially means that in order to avail broadband internet services (which implies high data transfer rate of say example 512kbps or 1 mpbs...) we must have physical cable line (wire) or telephone line....

I would just like to ask in this context one more thing: (please have patience with me)...

In india we have a company called Reliance infocomm www.relianceinfo.com which offers both mobile as well as internet services...

Now through their mobile connection (which is obviously wireless) people can connect to internet as well which means that if say i have a laptop and I use reliance company mobile then i can be connected to internet without any cable or telephone line between my laptop and reliance company (which in this case ia also ISP)...

clearlu u can see that with laptop and mobile phone they can use internet without any physical line be it cable wire or telephone...

This is what i was trying to refer....

Again i must say thank u for ur help... :p :p :p

sunando

i use a spam filter software in which upto 90% spam effectively gets eliminated practically so not really a problem...

thanks for the advice though :p

Hi salvador,

just thought u might want to have a look at the following link...

http://www.relianceinfo.com/Infocomm/Rip/rip_fwp.html

see the 2nd benefit

"BENEFIT #2

Wireless Internet (R Connect)

In-built modem for high speed internet connectivity at speeds up to 115 kbps. No separate ISP connection required "

BUT the only problem is that its only upto 115 kbps currently and that too not in my city here in India.....

but i mean truly wireless internet...

thanks

BB deing delivered through the telephone line or cable means exactly that. When I signed a contract with an ISP for BB service, the asked BT to prepare the telephone line so that it carries the BB signal as well the standard telephone signal. Now, my router is connected to a little device that splits the telephone line into my BB and my standard telephone line. This means I can use the phone at the same time I'm connected to the Internet.

Regarding the other company you are talking about, I don't think we have that service in the UK so I cannot contribute very much. It seems like a good idea but I'm not too sure if it works well. If the experience one has with mobile phones is anything to go by, I would be very suspicious that the service can maintain an internet connection as you can over a telephone wire. In principle the idea is good but I'm pretty sure you will not have a very stable connection everywhere you go. I would not consider 115 kbps a high speed internet connection anyway!

In the UK, we have a wireless Internet BB that is delivered wirelessly. I don't know much about either but I think is much faster than 115 kbps. I don't think you use it for phone calls either. There is also a BB through a satellite!

Perhaps you can read about these technologies on this website.

Good luck

still that's 10% that gets through ;)

yes that company provides its services only in India...

I would not consider 115 kbps a high speed internet connection anyway!

very true agreed but even companies like earthlink.net which is one of top companies in USA (alexa website ranking top 100) provide wireless internet access in usa offer that speed generally; see the following link:

http://www.earthlink.net/wireless/laptop/cell/

Surf the Web at speeds up to 144 kilobits per second

In the UK, we have a wireless Internet BB that is delivered wirelessly. I don't know much about either but I think is much faster than 115 kbps.

can i have the name of that company or its website address just for comparison purpose...

I don't think you use it for phone calls either.

we can use reliance company mobile phone as a mobile phone and when connected to laptop mobile phone acts as modem but without requiring cable or copper line (thats telephone line or cable wires)

"If the experience one has with mobile phones is anything to go by, I would be very suspicious that the service can maintain an internet connection as you can over a telephone wire."

my friend who uses reliance wireless internet service says its stable but yes slow...but i think slow bcz of kbps limitation of upto115kbps...

In principle the idea is good but I'm pretty sure you will not have a very stable connection everywhere you go.

where the mobile phone works (the area covered by mobile which in case of reliance is all major cities in india) wireless internet also works (in those areas)

Plz revert back by expressing your thoughts on my latest observations here as ur replies have helped me a lot in organizing my thinking process and understanding wireless internet better...

would wait for ur comments on what i wrote in this post..

saying thank u once again would be too less now...

u r simply awesome man..

sunando
