using a modem/router as a router

might be getting better access for temp for a webdesign job, was hoping it were possible to use my router as a router for the duration so l can access on wireless.

the main one is in a house and due to distance has patchy wireless which l was hoping to get around by placing my router in to boost the signal hence allowing myself access.

kinda need to know if l can do it with the DG834N asap, lm assuming it will work (hopefully) as it would save me some issues. until we get a proper line.

Just so we're clear, you essentially want to use two routers to improve your wireless coverage? It should be noted that the signal from ordinary wireless adaptors can help to 'support' wireless coverage too. For example, I can't get wireless upstairs but if I put my Wi-Fi equipped laptop in the hall below then I'm just about able to connect (mesh).

Obviously you could just buy a more powerful router / adaptors or invest in a bigger antenna, although for what you require I believe both routers would need to support 'bridging' (Bridge Mode). Now I've not needed to do this before since we've only ever had to deploy one router to cover a specific section, but I fear it may also require you to use two routers of the same brand as well.

Bridging works in the same way as it does on your software operating system, which allows you to bridge wired and wireless networks with separate details so that they’re seen as one. The only other way is to use a SWITCH (intelligent HUB) with LAN cables and hook up the routers directly, though that does kind of defeat the purpose of using wireless :) .

thats kinda the plan but lm using wired rather than wireless as it doesnt quite reach this far plus l dont have the passwords and nor does the owner whos wife set it up lol

If you just want to hook the dg834N by cable to the existing router to see if the range is better, then I think you'd need to go to its "LAN IP Setup" page and change the DG834N's IP Address to an unused address on the same subnet as the main router/ modem* and disable the dg834N's DHCP server.

* eg if the lan uses 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 you could set the DG834N to use a high address on the subnet eg around 192.168.0.213, which should avoid the need to adjust the main router's DHCP settings to reserve an IP address for the dg834N.

The latest version of the DG834N firmware supports wirless distribution (WDS), if the other router also supports WDS and you can figure out its password so you can set it up, then you might be able to use the dg834n as a repeater.

I stopped using my DG834N some months ago so I've never tried the option out (mine has the won't restart until its cold after a power outage fault - which is now up to several hours), however there seems to be a post about setting WDS here:- http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?p=127377

I think the dg834g v3 which if as I recall you also have, also has WDS support in later firmwares - so it might be possible to hook the dg834g to the main router by cable and use WDS to link it to the dg834n

the basic idea which will be temporary is to use my DG834N to indeed expand wireless range, but it wont be near a wireless signal, the plan is to connect it to a cable that has been fitted between the owners modem and the office.. basically connecting the cat5 to my router and then routing the internet via my wireless modem until we actually get a proper router for the office..

in fact l hope to have some recommendations for wireless routers (dont need a modem for this job even ld like to try using my own as a temporary solution for routing the net which hopefully can be accomplished as a temporary solution)

if it were that easy, and l had money and anything other than my modem/router then it would have been a good idea, along with the fact the yard has tractors and other cars coming in and out all the time.. which means the cable idea is also out due to the damage it will receive from getting driven over only realy possibility l have is trying to use my wireless... even adhoc with the laptop would have been something but l forsee issues with doing it that way since it gets taken home and ld have to keep resetting it for adhoc settings.
