VAT back up to 17.5%, but...

I see a number of online retailers who did not pass the savings on to customers when the rate dropped to 15% are saying they are putting prices up to cover the extra 2.5% VAT. Cheeky barstewards!

I have no doubt that some high street shops are doing the same :hrmph:

Is anyone naming and shaming them??

It is not hi tech, but Lidl are not raising their prices, and they DID lower them when VAT was reduced.

Yes - who's pulling a fast one?

Fuller's have put 10p on a pint. But they do that too when the budget puts 1p on a pint. Given that they're my local brewery, I can't say I'm best pleased. Are they trying to drive punters away?

If 10p is 2.5%........

Bloody hell!!

You need a platinum credit card to buy a pint at your local!!!

In the end the solution is always to just shop around for the best deal, unless it's a service or situation where you have no choice. The UK market is competitive and modern consumers will always hunt for the best deal; anybody that doesn't play fair will end up losing more than they gain.

Erm...unless my maths is a bit dodgy (which isn't unusual) that equates to a cost per pint of £4 - not exactly cheap, but not exactly platinum card levels either. I was recently in Sweden, and they would love a pint to cost £4.

I saw a brief list of retailers and their VAT policies recently. Can't remember most of them, but I can remember it saying:

  • Argos will adjust their prices at the end of January (when the new catalogue is out)
  • M&S adjusted theirs from 1st Jan (they didn't need to re-price all of the stock as they simply reduced the VAT at the checkout)
  • O2's prices will be increased from Jan (they did reduce them)
  • John Lewis I think are waiting until Feb

I don't care much since I bought my only big purchase of the near future on Boxing Day.

Same, got all my big spending for the year down in the post-XMas sales, though I could still use a new washable suit :) .

Ok, so I exaggerated a bit.

I must be getting old; I can remember buying cider by the 1/2 gallon for £2.50.

It is Chiswick, dear boy.

However, in a similar vein, was I the only one loathing the PC World pre-VAT rise ads? "Get M$ Office for only £69.99 (I think) and save £30." :crap:

I AM getting old; £2.50??!! it was 90p per 1/2 gallon!! With 10p off if you brought your own container!!

Still havent figured out where I got the £2.50 from, but I am under a lot of stress ( and a lot of water after the hose connector on the washing machine split this afternoon!!!)
