Very disturbing content (advert) on this site

Not sure how much control the owners of this site have over what adverts are published, so they might not be aware, but last night I visited, and instead of the usual Hello Fresh adverts etc, I was presented with images from the October Hamas massacre, including very gory images of dead people, at least one was a child. I’m all up for world events like this to be documented on the internet, but I don’t think this is the place for it.

Online advertising is an automated bidding process that allows the highest bidder to buy ads often without strict vetting. Some of these ad brokers are on a tight budget it seems.

I was shown adverts the other day branded McAfee claiming my antivirus was expired and I needed to renew my subscription. On click it hopped through a few obviously scummy domains and then landed me at McAfee.com!

Clicking it then goes to:
2024-01-11_23.webp

Which another click then takes you to a genuine mcafee.com page to pay.

I wonder how many people have seen this and fallen for it. The kind of people ispreview sometimes writes about falling for scams in the articles?

I've not seen any war/disturbing advert content (yet).

I'm pretty sure I recall @Mark.J saying he has little (advanced) control over ads displayed BUT if you make him aware I believe he has the option to block the offending ad from being displayed.

I'm sure Mark will correct me if I've remembered that incorrectly.

Thanks. I actually don’t mind adverts (although they are particularly intrusive on this site) if they help fund the site. That said I do use a DNS blocker from time to time (PiHole and Adguard).

I’ve seen worse in my day job and very little phases me. Just wanted to make the admin aware in case they weren’t, and have some kind of control to stop maybe other people seeing them.

Yes, so that's definitely not something that would be allowed by either our ad settings or the ad network itself (most of the ads are served via Google's system). Often when that occurs, it's because a dodgy advertiser has infiltrated the system, usually by either hacking a legitimate advertiser or posing as a legitimate advertiser and then changing the displayed ad post-approval. This is an industry-wide challenge.

As Brumski said, I don't have control over the ad network itself, but if you do see a dodgy/fraudulent ad like that then ideally if you right-click it (this won't activate the ad) and copy the link, then paste it to me and I can forward to the ad network's abuse team. It also helps if you make a note of the date/time when you saw the ad.

7:07pm: The image displayed worked when clicked but was unable to right click and copy the link! I could only see copy image location. (This happens about 50% of the time on the adverts shown here when viewing the site with firefox).

The bottom of the page ads seem to be misbehaving a bit today for me. Just spotted I past 10mins

They're fighting for space and advertising over each other.

1000007937.webp

And then there's a rash of ads that have some broken tags and just disgorge text, which sometimes go quite some way up the page. I think it's something to do with property but the text is so small and my eyesight is rubbish....

I don't know why everyone is making such a fuss about advertising, I don't see any advertising in my browser(s) when I visit any web sites.

Have none of you tried installing an 'adblocker' extension? It will change your view of websites.

Take a look at the following extensions and see how you get on:

Ghostery
uBlock Origin
Privacy Badger
Adblocker Ultimate

I also have NoScript installed and you can block unsuitable content with that.

Because if we all load ad blockers then for smaller sites like ispreview we strangle an important source of revenue that helps continues to keeping the site going.
Exactly, this is one of the sites I have my adblocker disabled for.
