Very very slow net... Awful

as i mentioned in other post i am with pipex and my net speed has all of a sudden gone to almost dialup speed... in fact from the results below my upload speed is faster than my download speed.

my results:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/120189619797249132306.html

my connection is 8mbit max and the exchange allows 4mbit max... and so far they have no congestion problems on the exchange...

it happened recently.. i did have a lot of malware on my pc, i have cleared it all.. run winsockfix.. run lots of other software but still my net is sooo slow...

my net connects at 2.6mbps...which is the average speed it usually connects at

however my download speeds on average are well under 20k/s and i cant download a 40mb file without it timing out.. if i download lees than 40mb and if it finishes it usually takes over an hour to download off a fast server.

im hoping somebody can have a solution because im really annoyed with this... the net is pointless for me now purely cause most web pages time out or take ageeessss to load

many thanks

Ah I am with tiscali having only just started using them in a new rental house. I have exactly this issue. My connection is so slow its ridiculous. Like the other chap here I am getting higher upload speeds than download speeds in tests. I am not all that savvy with what the noise stuff all means etc in my modem settings/status. I do occasionally get it above 3mb but not very often.
Having called tiscali I have been told that there is too much noise on my line to support an 8mb connection?? Why would they actually connect it at that speed as they supposedly go to the exchange and test the line first to ensure it is good enough.
Now my phone line coming into the house is a mess and I thought it might be that but I have cut the wire right back and removed the dodgy push connectors and chafed insulation and soldered the line to the main box to the wire coming into the house. I also removed the 3 extension lines heading all around the house that appeared to have been bodged in the back of the box and all interconnected. Nothing has improved if anything its gotten worse.
Now BT have said because my telephone works fine its not their problem. Tiscali technical have said I should downgrade to 2mb and that will be achievable???

Any advice would be appreciated here

OK open dns has doubled my speed instantly and thats without even registering (not sure what advantage there is to registering)

Sir.

I would suggest you look at exiting your contract, migration code in hand and consider another ISP.

Good advice.;)

The Pipex takeover by Tiscali has started a whole new net word; Tipex, they have effectively blotted out connections.. ;)

Right having tried some of the tips on here like open dns my connection is now up to 2.5mb from less than 200kb. Would that indicate that its my ISP at fault here and not my line?

Oh goody back to ultra slow internet again!!! Doesn't matter what I do as soon as I get a decent connection it drops back down again within about 24 hours.

The upload speed offered is obviously line dependent, but yes, we have packages which would offer a 448k upstream speed and network capacity to support it too if you care to take a look. I guess some folks will come along with slightly less one sided recommendations soon too!

Yeah i can get virgin but my experiences with them as a company and NTL before them and Cable and wireless before them and Nynex before them has been gawd awful.

I was looking at this crowd http://www.naims.co.uk/ seems like an OK deal to me and I can't see them capping or throttling the line as they probably want you to use as much internet as possible :D

Entant are a company that that supply internet access to other ISPs, Entanet are a good supplier they have 6 centrals. Most ISPs that reslee entanet have two caps the peak and offpeak limits normally 30gig peak and 300 offpeak.

I am with Aquiss who are another one that is on Entanet centrals I have no complaints at all speed is good all the time and if a central gets overloaded dropping ppp moves you to a new central.
